Know of one? I can remember when I was a kid in the 60's, I swear I timed the toaster at 45 seconds to toast 2 slices of bread. Nowdays, they take 4-5 minutes, sometimes longer. I have bought cheap, I have bought expensive, Proctor Silex to T-Fal. They all suck. Granted, the old toasters used to dim the house lights when you put them down, but, hey, how about some where's in between dangerous and useless? Seems to be the best numbers that I can find are about 900-1000 watts per 2-slice. Any ideas, anyone?
When I go to Asia, I see toasters in the hotels that do a pretty good job, albeit, they are 220V, and they don't have such nanny governments. You can tell that they are better, because their elements glow brighter than ours. I even thought about taking a 4 slice toaster and moving 2 of the elements over to the other side, to double the toasting power |

You could try picking up a COMMERCIAL TOASTER from your local Restaurant Supply store...
Interestingly enough, to get the kind of speed you want it looks like you'll need THIS one. At 120V, 2200 watts, 4 slots, and 300 slice/hr that works out to about 45 secs per slice:
Dammit now I want one! |

I feel your pain. I actually paid around $90 for a Proctor Silex model about a year ago that's now collecting dust. Only time I even bother with toast anymore is on the weekends when I have extra time in the mornings.
Take a sniff around EBAY too. From a dollar & cents perspective, I'm not sure how serious you want to get about toasting things but here's an 1800w Waring model for $85. And here's a different 2200 watt model for $129. That's a steal if you're willing to clean it up. |

That exact toaster is installed on my mess deck. I can tell you that it takes a LOT longer than 45 second to toast two slices of plain white bread. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Larry David found out how a slow toaster could affect your life in curb your enthusiasm.
Chalk everything up to lawyers and the every cheapening of consumer goods and our willingness to accept them. I have a toaster oven which is even slower than almost all purpose built toasters. I get some awesome reverse grill marks. |

Breathe deep, have a cup of coffee and then enjoy your toasted goodness. It won't be the longest wait of your day. Thanks, but I wish it were so simple. The issue is not only with the wait time, it is with the end product. Instead of just a caramelized exterior, you get a twice-baked bread slice. The interior of the slice looses too much of its moistness, and the entire slice sort-of becomes toasted, not just the exterior. Plus, I often eat toast at night, so its not like I am in a hurry. ETA: Thanks for everyone's suggestions. Maybe I should try an open flame toast on my rangetop. |

Go with one of these. It's pretty fast -- not what you are asking for -- but it has a countdown and warning beep so it makes it seem like it goes faster. Plus you get entertainment with the leverless lifting action. Clearly it doesn't take much to entertain me. ![]() http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYYfQDmhNjM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPI12GUHvgI |

HaHa. No. But I have been known to be "toasted" every now and then. It takes twice as long to make my toast as it does to make my eggs. Although, the eggs stay too hot to eat, especially with cheese, so I guess it evens out. I am just symbolically taking out my frustration about our "PC" society we live in nowdays. I think fondly back to a time when the .gov stayed out our lives, and if we wanted to burn down our homes, it was our own business. HaHa. Toasters were real toasters back then... <sigh>
The lights don't even dim when you put down a few slices of bread now... wimps. |
