Ok, since I'm drunk and a little "talkative" tonight....a thread in General Forum got me thinking.....What is acceptable hot dog "dressing"?  Personally, I go with yellow mustard, mayo and relish.  Acceptable adds are sourkraut and diced onion.  Ketchup isn't allowed (unless you're a kid)!

You?

Brown mustard, onions, homemade hot relish

I do on occasion like a good 'kraut dog, Chicago style, or the always yummy chilidog.

[#9]
Depends on the mood.  If I am home and can make my own it is good old WV Hot Dog Chili yellow mustard onion cole slaw and yes even ketchup.

If I am out and in a ball park or cooking out etc then I like Kraut, sauteed inoins and some brown mustard.
5/13/2013 9:59:40 AM EDT
[#10]
while not all at the same time, I like:
mustard
onions
chili
cheese
kraut
ketchup
5/13/2013 10:09:25 AM EDT

Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce. Any variety will do.

Wrapped in a crescent roll with cheese and bacon, then  little bowls of dipping sauces...
5/14/2013 3:26:29 PM EDT

Lots of onions
mustard

the only time ketchup is acceptable is if you're under 12.

otherwise its brown or yellow mustard, with possibly saurkraut, onions in red gravy, chili without beans, cheese, or pickle relish. but definitely mustard regardless of other toppings.
5/14/2013 6:49:19 PM EDT
[#18]
Wolf Chili, Mayo, Mustard, Shredded cheese. So much of each that there is no possibility of picking the dog up. Must be eaten with a fork .

As a side note, Omaha Steaks make some really damn good hotdogs. One of my business partners sent me some as  thank you. Tasty.

the omaha hot dogs ARE awesome, but somewhat cumbersome with toppings since they're so thick. delicious though.

you shut your hamburger-face. I don't use the onions in gravy, but my mom likes them. I'm a brown mustard and relish guy.

I love Chicago Dogs.

I had Nathan's for the first time last year in Vegas.
Love their dogs.

Thanks to this thread I have now tried this.  It is most excellent.  I am starting to put it on a lot more things, such as hamburgers, rice dishes, bloody marys, etc.

Google up sonoran dogs, Tucson and you will see some excellent topping ideas.  Bacon wrapped dog goodness!!!!

"Meat chili". Is that an oxymoron?

I don't think it is an oxymoron.  I think it is a descriptive used to differentiate normal chili from the vegetarian chili favored by the california and tree hugger crowds.

I like whatever Portillo's puts on them.  Also like Superdawg in Chicago.  Can't buy either of their dogs in a grocery store, but they are the best ever.

I have never met a hot dog I did not like.........

I'm definitely going to try some of these suggestions though.

Straight up. A good hotdog doesn't need anything on it.
6/5/2013 5:43:39 PM EDT

White hots are the best. Actually, the reds are good, too. Mix it up with toppings. They are all good.

I do too, when the dog and bun are heated up together, and the bun gets a little chewy.

Yellow mustard
Chili
Cheese
Mustard
Kraut
Bacon
Jalapeno
Pickles...I do the Vlasic Stackers and cut them in half length-wise

Those are my favorite toppings, I use various combinations.

If you have a 5 Guys near you, try the Bacon Cheese Dog sometime...they split the dog down the middle, grill it, then sandwich about 5 pieces of bacon in the dog.  Good stuff.

I know I'm weird but I hate ketchup  and mustard and don't put them on anything.

A grilled all beef dog, chaired (just about burnt) from a charcoal or wood burning grill doesn't need anything IMO.

My second choice would be a pan fried all beef dog with some sauerkraut and\or onions.

The only way I can enjoy a boiled or mystery meat dog is in a Cincinnati style Coney ( 'nati style "chili", shredded cheddar, onions)

horseradish mustard with relish
7/2/2013 12:33:35 PM EDT

ketchup, yellow mustard, relish... maybe cheese, but it has to be that fake stuff and not real cheese. Kraut on a braut, but never a hot dog, or chili. if you have to eat it with a fork it isn't a hot dog

The *real* secret to a good hot dog is the bun, but as for toppings... I don't remember where I saw it long ago, but one of my favorite hot dogs has a nacho theme.

Monterey Jack Cheese

Guacamole

Pickled Jalapeno

Pico de Gallo

Sriracha

Crumbled Tortilla Chips

I grilled a metric ton of hot dogs for my kid's b-day party a few weeks ago. I did half of them wrapped in bacon, half plain, and we setup a "buffet" of sorts with all the fixins. We had chili leftover, but all the (fresh) gauc was gone.

Hot chilli
Cheese
Onions
Slaw
Mustard
7/14/2013 7:39:59 PM EDT

BBQ sauce
Kraut

I'm tempted to go to Sonic and try one of their dogs on a pretzel bun. Anybody had one?

If I'm working away from home, I'll stop at Sonic and get a 'foot-long chili cheese dog' with extra onions. Good shit, Maynard.

Sauerkraut

Sabrett Hot Dogs

Split in the middle buns

Spicy Brown mustard

All of the above

But I will add this:

Arfcom turned me on to this.

Warning.....You will never be able to eat a regular hot dog again.  Seriously.

When near Huntington, WV, I sometimes stop at Hillbilly Hotdogs.  My favorite is the egg, cheese, and bacon dog.  I think it has some jalopenos too.

Bethlehem, PA (next to Lehigh Univ) used to have a few shops selling "greekers" - grilled dogs with chili sauce, both probably cooking for days.  And they would come with deep fried pierogies.  I think most of those shops are gone.  You might be able to get the same thing over in Allentown (like Yoccos).  That was good stuff, and cheap back then.

The best ball park dog I've ever had was the ones at Fenway Park (kayem)
