Ok, since I'm drunk and a little "talkative" tonight....a thread in General Forum got me thinking.....What is acceptable hot dog "dressing"? Personally, I go with yellow mustard, mayo and relish. Acceptable adds are sourkraut and diced onion. Ketchup isn't allowed (unless you're a kid)!

2 hot dog buns with mustard spread on them
split hot dogs in half pan fry them cook in sauce pan chili no beans put hot dogs on buns pour chili over them spread shredded cheese over it put plate on toaster oven to melt the cheese. serve with pickles Damn good if you ask me. |
Wolf Chili, Mayo, Mustard, Shredded cheese. So much of each that there is no possibility of picking the dog up. Must be eaten with a fork .![]() As a side note, Omaha Steaks make some really damn good hotdogs. One of my business partners sent me some as thank you. Tasty. |

the only time ketchup is acceptable is if you're under 12. otherwise its brown or yellow mustard, with possibly saurkraut, onions in red gravy, chili without beans, cheese, or pickle relish. but definitely mustard regardless of other toppings. isn't that basically cooked onions in ketchup based sauce? |

I don't use the onions in gravy, but my mom likes them. I'm a brown mustard and relish guy. |

I am starting to put it on a lot more things, such as hamburgers, rice dishes, bloody marys, etc. Google up sonoran dogs, Tucson and you will see some excellent topping ideas. Bacon wrapped dog goodness!!!! |

Yellow mustard, onions, meat chili and coleslaw. I use Chow Chow if I don't have slaw. Never had Chow Chow, but heard it is pretty good eats. Other than that, you described my perfect hot dog. "Meat chili". Is that an oxymoron? I don't think it is an oxymoron. I think it is a descriptive used to differentiate normal chili from the vegetarian chili favored by the california and tree hugger crowds. |

I actually like plain hot dogs. I do too, when the dog and bun are heated up together, and the bun gets a little chewy. Yellow mustard Chili Cheese Mustard Kraut Bacon Jalapeno Pickles...I do the Vlasic Stackers and cut them in half length-wise Those are my favorite toppings, I use various combinations. If you have a 5 Guys near you, try the Bacon Cheese Dog sometime...they split the dog down the middle, grill it, then sandwich about 5 pieces of bacon in the dog. Good stuff. |

I know I'm weird but I hate ketchup and mustard and don't put them on anything.
A grilled all beef dog, chaired (just about burnt) from a charcoal or wood burning grill doesn't need anything IMO. My second choice would be a pan fried all beef dog with some sauerkraut and\or onions. The only way I can enjoy a boiled or mystery meat dog is in a Cincinnati style Coney ( 'nati style "chili", shredded cheddar, onions) |

The *real* secret to a good hot dog is the bun, but as for toppings... I don't remember where I saw it long ago, but one of my favorite hot dogs has a nacho theme. Monterey Jack Cheese Guacamole Pickled Jalapeno Pico de Gallo Sriracha Crumbled Tortilla Chips I grilled a metric ton of hot dogs for my kid's b-day party a few weeks ago. I did half of them wrapped in bacon, half plain, and we setup a "buffet" of sorts with all the fixins. We had chili leftover, but all the (fresh) gauc was gone. |

When near Huntington, WV, I sometimes stop at Hillbilly Hotdogs. My favorite is the egg, cheese, and bacon dog. I think it has some jalopenos too.
Bethlehem, PA (next to Lehigh Univ) used to have a few shops selling "greekers" - grilled dogs with chili sauce, both probably cooking for days. And they would come with deep fried pierogies. I think most of those shops are gone. You might be able to get the same thing over in Allentown (like Yoccos). That was good stuff, and cheap back then. The best ball park dog I've ever had was the ones at Fenway Park (kayem) |
