Making up a pot for salmon camp this weekend. My great uncle always makes it for deer camp back home in Minnesota, so I figure I can contribute here in Michigan where we are guests at another camp.
I recently found out that the soup and the word are Finlander (as in northern MN/WI/MI Finnish-American rather than Finnish). So'm I, so that makes me feel even better about it. It's a very basic recipe –– linked here. Our family recipe is basically that, though I always try to use venison. I have not tried the fish version (kalamojakka) due to horror stories from my grandma and uncle. Goes great with homemade wheat bread, and benefits from allspice in place of heavy pepper. |

That's pretty much your standard recipe for beef stew. Can't wrap my head around a fish version. Blech. Yep. I have always considered the included combination of cabbage, rutabaga and allspice to be the essential "mojakka" components. I just had a good weekend that left me with close to 10 pounds of fresh Lake Michigan salmon fillets... I see some kalamojakka in my future. Once, at least.

I've never made it with allspice and rutabagas, so, that will have to be taken care of this week. You've probably used it before, but GO EASY on the allspice! I made a huge stockpot for this weekend, probably 2.5lbs of meat and again as much veggies, and I used a half teaspoon of allspice. |
