So this can apply to Zeds/SHTF/mass panic whatever you fancy. Searching this was difficult so I just decided to ask and see. I am looking to buy/or build a perimeter or DMR. I have an M4 and AK for the usual business and shotguns/handguns for the up close and personal.
Now in a zed/shtf situation where you have stopped for the night or an extended security hault what would you use to provide security for mid-long range secutriy. Both AK and M4 are set up with holo sights for 200m and closer...im looking for the 500m-800m ranges. I know it would be better to stay quiet and let them pass but in the event that the force is non zed and intends harm. another group of trigger happy survivors that is more about taking what you have vs. coming to gether. price range is preferably >$1000 looking for reliable, common caliber, ability to be supressed.... I have thought of supressing my M4 and getiing a scope with a 1o'clock holo to be dual purpose....thoughts, scenarios, good deals are all wecome! |

So you're going to be searching day and night 500-800 meters away with a scope and picking off zeds?
308 will do just fine and is the most common for a medium range rifle. Its not possible to buy/build a good rifle with good quality glass and a supressor for $1000 though. I use to own about 10 grand in bolt action rifles and Nightforce glass, but i came to the realization that they wouldnt do any good but keep the safe warm. They are just too heavy for carrying on foot. If i cant hit what im aiming at with my AR then i have no business shooting in the first place if they are that far away. No reason to waiste ammo on something that is not an immediate threat. |

Remington 700 or Savage Model 12.
.223 or .308 depending on what suppressors you already own, unless you want to buy another, it only money right. Obvious different in range capibilites here. (spelling) Send to tornado tech for chop and threading. Optics. Under a grand you could ACOG your AR. + small reflex sight for top prob break that price range but its an option. |

not going to sit there seaching for targets at range but i am not going to sleep without some sort of firewatch through the night. i can shoot my AR just fine...kind of my job, and as I said zeds aside in a group scenario a person could carry this and share the weight, while providing a DMR role for group movement. this could be more applicable to a shtf end of society situation.
really cant build for under a G? The optics and supressor not included... |
| personally i wouldn't engage anyone or anything unless its close, especially those (hopefully) stupid zombies. i would say don't waste ammo and draw attention to yourself, just create obstacles for the zeds and/or lay low and quiet. remember, the head is pretty small at 100m and even smaller at 500-800m. but your opinion may differ and your mileage may vary. |
| My thoughts (and they are for myself only based on my skill level) Is that my AR in my hands will not be making head shots past 100 yards short of dumb luck, and even within 100 yards I would not confidently be claiming headshots on a slowly moving target until aroud 50 yards. Honestly for anything past 100 yards, I would want a scoped rifle to even think of head shots, and best case I would likely be limited out to 500 yards even with an excilent rifle and glass. Past that, too much influence from too manyenvironmental factors that are beyond me to acuratly calculate. I have accepted that I am not a sniper and will never be one. I feel confident in the abilities I have, but I am a realist and not fooling myself. I could find a Rem 700 with scope for under $1000, and it would be good enough for anything I would every be able to do. I could also drop $4000 on a rifle, scope, and accesories to have a 1000 yard killer, but it would be a waste because while the rifle can shoot to 1000 yards, I cant. If you feel confident in your abilities to make those 1000 yard shots, then you will have to drop the dough to do it. Otherwise, save your money. |
| I believe the scout is a bit out of his price range.. but the weight savings is nice. Cetme and g3 can be had for a decent price allowing a few hundred for optics. But you lose a of accuracy compared to the bolt guns. So not ideal for zeds at range. But if its people 20 rounds can be a lifesaver. |
