I have a standard poodle that I hunt with. Should I give him a cut/trim before I take him out in the fields and the heat or not??
Opening day can be as hot as 90 degrees once the sun comes up. Yes, I will bring plenty of water for him, but He is black and has pretty long curly hair right now.

Have the dog set outside in the sun for a while.  Then put your hand on the fur and push in towards the skin is the skin cool.  Leave the fur.

We had a black, female standard when I was a kid. We always put a puppy clip on her in the summer and she seemed to like it better. Just a pet, though, not a working dog.

Some breaks and water are usually fine. I go with my lab, and I let her rest every once in a while in the shade and she seems to be fine.
