I have a good relationship with the breeder of my dog, who has many decades of experience and is very careful and reputable. She has asked me if I would be interested in breeding my female (who I have kept intact for show purposes) as she has very good conformation and an unusually good temperament for her breed. I would never breed her myself but would consider letting the breeder do so. I own this bitch outright, no co-ownership or other side deals other than an agreement that IF she is ever bred, the breeder gets the first pick of any litter if she wants it.

I have no idea what sort of agreement would be appropriate or customary here. My initial thought would be to have a contract that allows the breeder to obtain health clearances, stud contract, vet care as needed, etc. and she would bear the cost of that and any other costs of the pregnancy and whelping and shots for the pups, and in exchange I would get 2nd pick of the litter or the proceeds of the sale of that pup, at my choice.

Anyone have knowledge or experience with this sort of arrangement?

I can't say I've done a lot of this, but when we bred pointers, we typically gave the owner of the stud the pick in lieu of a stud fee, and the owner of the bitch owned the litter and took care of the vet fees, etc.  In your case, the owner of the stud possibly has a bit of a marketing edge getting the pups gone, it might be better to split the litter and costs.  We never did a formal contract, pretty much it was done at the handshake stage.

Honestly, you need to figure out what YOU think is an equitable trade.

You aren't necessarily vieing for their end, as they will take care of that.  If she has been in the business for a while, then she knows how it works.

Argue for the best position for yourself.............

What I would offer is this:

Owner of stud gets pick of litter.  If I was giving the entire litter away, as you don't seem to want puppies, I would just offer an up front fee for your dog.

She gets the litter, she takes care of vet bills, she gets the puppies.  YOU get paid for the transaction, but don't have to deal with anything besides a preggo dog.

Depending on what a pure bred puppy of your dog's breed is worth, I would ask for no more than half a typical litter's total potential profit.  But I would have it up front, as you are taking a risk of having a litter of puppies to raise if she walks on the deal.

Half a litter's profit up front is hard to calculate, as litter size can vary greatly and costs can vary as well depending on any complications.

My main motive isn't to make a ton of money.  This is a fairly rare breed (about 3,000 or so alive in the U.S. at any given time) and my dog was a result of a first time breeding from an imported stud that turned out exceptionally well. I'd like to contribute to continuing and helping the breed but I want a little something in return for putting my dog at risk.

Figure out what you want in the deal. Most breeders will take pick of the litter instead of stud fee. Unless you negotiate everything the female's owner is generally responsible for all other associated costs. This isn't too bad of a deal if you get a decent litter. Depending on the breed you can get big bucks per puppy.
