So my soon to be wife has 3 cats, and one of them bout once a week pisses somewhere it shouldn't. Tonight it was my over stuffed chair. Got the bottom half of the back, and bout a 12" round spot on the seat. Usually if she goes somewhere shes not supposed to its in the bathroom floor, on dirty clothes while I get dressed after a shower (I pick them up after I am dressed). They always have a clean litter box (was clean this time as well).
So two questions. 1: How do I keep them off my chair, and from pissing on the floor and other spots? 2: How do I get rid of the cat smell? I am NOT a cat fan. I have lived with them for over a year now, and all I smell is piss. I thought they were clean animals? But 9 out of 10 people who I know that have them house smells like cat piss. WTF? Its almost to the point of me moving out till they die, or are gone. I love my GF very much, but I just feel like I live in a sewer. We keep the house very clean, but it's frustrating as hell to spend all the time cleaning an still smell cat. Help me ARFCOM, your my only hope..... |
| Dude, I feel you. I really do. We used to have barn cats at my house. They took care of mice and the occasional rat, but the fact of the matter is that I know of no other animal whose piss and shit smell as badly, that situation resolved itself after I crawled into the cab of a tractor they had been using as a latrine all winter. My current GF had a cat right up until it tore the shit out of my motorcycle seat and pissed in my truck (both were in the garage). I flat out told her that this was an unacceptable situation and she could cure it, or I would, she knew full well what I meant and solved the problem (it became an outdoor cat, the only remaining one). You can call me an asshole or harsh or whatever you want, a well trained, clean cat is one thing, little shitting pissing fucks are another. I'd sort it out before it becomes a huge point of contention in your relationship, because make no mistake, if you don't it WILL become an issue. |

She did, they started before she moved to our house. One actually stopped pissing on things. He's the only male, and to be honest the only one I kinda like. So long as the shit isn't piled so high he cant get into the box he will use it. The other two are picky little bitches, had to buy a $300 litter box because one wont poo so long as there is even one turd in the box. I hate to ask her to get rid of them, so I am hoping there is a repellant that doesn't stink to us we can use.
She has agreed to never have more than one cat ever again (I am very allergic to them, but manage it well). I just can't take the smell, and I have had ferrets! The cats are the only thing that we fight over, an I always feel like an asshole. But I miss having friends over. Just to embarrassed to have them with the smell. Bout to buy a cage to keep them in when we sleep, or go out.... |

Does the cat in question use the litter box at all?
Classic "won't use the litter box" solutions: 1. Use at least two litter boxes for three cats. 2. Place a litter box on each floor, or at each end of the house––cat's are lazy. 3. Try different litter. 4. While you are keeping the boxes clean, some cat's like you to leave a clump or turd in there, I guess as inspiration. Of our two cat's we have one like that now. 5. Some cat's like covered boxes, some like uncovered boxes. 6. If it's a covered box does the cat find it large enough. It's a crapshoot. You just have to try a bunch of stuff like this until it works. A product called Nature's Miracle will get the smell out. Use it in copious amounts so it soaks in just like the urine. Get it at Petsmart/co. |

Cats do not like change, if the move is recent they are resentful and will act up for a while. Also keep in mind they cant talk, the cat could be trying to tell you something is wrong. UTI's will cause cats to urinate in inappropriate places to notify their parents that they need help. Watch them when their in the litter box. I used to have one that would attack other cats in the box and chase them out of it. As far as the lingering smell use good (read expensive) cat litter and change it often, fresh step is a good choice IMO. Make sure the box is on a surface that can be washed easily. Get a carpet cleaner and use it. |

Quoted: There is a product to remove the urine smell. I had to buy it at a Vet. Sorry, I do not remember the name of it but a Vet will have it. You thinking of Nature's Miracle? Stuff works ok, but once something is pissed on, cats will ALWAYS be able to smell it and will think its ok to piss on in the future. |
| The cats have lived here for almost two years, and they like the motorized litter box. They all gather round to watch it clean the box out. We do use fresh step, and have a second box in the bathroom. None of the cats bug the one in the box. One of the cats hates me, and I think that maybe why it got my chair (I always sit there). |

male cats are the worst.
My female cat never pissed anywhere. Male cats wants to go outside and roam. they get super pissed if they are stuck in the house all day. (some breeds don't care, most american mixes want to roam). When they are pissed, they piss where you stay/sit/sleep at. Only solution I found, male cats need to go out and roam. I gave them to a family member who had 50+ acres of land. |

| I wish we could let them outside but she got them from a shelter, and they were de-clawed. Also not a big fan of outside cats. I have had over a $1000 worth of damage done to my properties from peoples outside cats (new car whose roof got scratched to hell, wires chewed, and interior pissed on/scratched up). So letting them out is not an option. Think if a litter change or two, and cleaning the carpets again doesn't work I will have to get cat cages for when we aren't home. Anyone know of any sprays to keep them off furniture? |
