Ok,

Thought I would ask here for some late training help. One of my dogs (a 3 year old Puggle (half beagle half pug) is normally pretty good about not barking, unless somebody knocks on the door or something similar.

The one time he does bark though, is when I get up early to go hunting. I will get up, let him out of his box and take him outside, and then bring him back them in while I finish getting ready to leave.

Once I leave, I put him back in their box and he starts barking. Wakes my wife up, once she gets up, and lets him out he will promptly lay on carpet and go back to sleep.

Any idea to keep them from barking after I leave?

Drives my wife nuts cause she now is getting up at the same time I am to go hunting, drives me nuts cause I have to hear about it when I get home.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

You can try a shock collar or something.  But yeah, first post has it...  Beagles are barkers.... most smaller dogs/hybrids are.

Have you thought about leaving your dog out.  He seems to want to sleep on the carpet after you leave.  As long as he doesn't get in to anything, it shouldn't be a problem.

1) As stated previously, Beagles bark. Ours did when I was kid.

2) Why is he in a box? You said once the wife is up he lays on the rug and stays quiet. Why can't you leave him out of the box when you leave? My wife leaves early every morning. She feeds the dogs and then they jump on the bed and go right back to sleep with me and never make a peep.

3) Why does your wife get in your ass for a dog that barks WHILE YOUR GONE? It's totally up to you but I would be straightening that shit out pronto.

4) If I lived in a box I would bark too.

If you decide to try the shock collar, stick it to your neck first to see how it feels. One of my friends had a barker and they bought a shock collar. He tried it himself first. The "mild electric correction" described in the literature was not so mild. They took it back and got a collar that sprays citronella oil when the dog barks. Unfortunately, Molly discovered that the spray runs out after 20-30 blasts so she'd just bark through it until it stopped spraying. It did give her a nice citrus scent though.

I could give my "slam that cage" monologue again, but people don't like it.

You aren't the one who recommends picking the cage up and dropping it are you?

Your wife is rewarding bad behavior by letting him out of the crate.  He's learned that barking gets him what he wants so he's going to keep doing it.  Leave him in the crate when he barks.  It'll suck for a at first but if you're consistent he'll figure it out.

No, I simply hit the top of the crate.  Same idea.

You have to know your dog to do this.  If they are chicken, they might be permanently afraid of the cage.

My dog isn't.  Stopped barking, likes his cage still.

This, ideally.  Some dogs, however, will keep it up for hours.  That's when you slam the cage

Seems as though he/she has you trained quite well.  Dogs love a routine and also usually tend to follow the alpha male in the pack.  Your wife may need to be the one to help "train" your dog to change his behavior.
