I love this author.  He writes about spies, assassins, mercenaries, arms dealers, the underworld, the cold war and its immediate aftermath, the war on terror--what's not to love?

The Bruce Willis movie The Jackal is based loosely on his book Day of the Jackal, which is way better.

Very British and very good, especially if you like twist endings and don't care for Marxism.

If you liked the Jackal get ahold of the original film, The Day of The Jackal. Much better than the Dreck that Willis starred in better written, more authentic, and actually based mostly on fact as are most of Forsyth's novels.

One of my favorite authors.

Liked Day of the Jackal as well as Dogs of War, The Odessa File and The Fourth Protocol.

QFT.  The first Day of the Jackal movie, while not as good as the book, kicked the Bruce Willis movie's ass.

Forsyth narrated a series back in the  early 80's Named Soldiers: a History of Men in Battle. If you are interested in a brief history of European Warfare this is the series to watch. I'm sure you should be able to find it on disk today. I copied it off of public TV about twenty years ago. I frequently use it while teaching European history.

I got into read Forsyth's books back in the 70's. Hell, I even skipped out of 9th grade drama practice one night to see "Day of the Jackal" at the theater. He's one author who's books I buy as soon as I see them. Even if I didn't know it was coming out and have no idea what it's even about. And he's never disappointed me yet.

He's also done some short stories, many having been published in Playboy. Look for "No Comebacks". "The Shepard" is also a short novel that I really like. It's about a RAF pilot flying his Voodoo fighter back to Britain from Cold War Germany for a Christmas holiday. And of course with Forsyth the story is much more exciting than that mere description.

Can someone tell me if The Afghan is worth reading?

I certainly thought so.

But then I haven't read a single one of his books that I thought otherwise.

No doubt about it.

Yes, it's worth reading.  Some characters are also in Fist of God, about the run-up to Gulf War I, so I'd read that one first.

I never made that connection!

Now I'm going to have to go back and reread them both.
