| I have an instructor job in the Army dealing with foreign weapons (am,fn fal,g3,uzi,bhp etc) I need recommendations on a good book that will give further insight into the internal working on weapons. As well as some background info but at the very least the internal workings. |

Two I can recommend are classics.
First is "Small Arms of the World". Originally by the famed W.H.B. Smith and later by Edward Ezell. This can be bought on Amazon and Ebay, often for as little as about $8.00. This starts with chapters on the history of firearms from Medieval times and then covers in separate chapters the development of revolvers, automatic pistols, single shot, bolt action, semi-auto and full auto rifles, then chapters on development of submachine guns, light and heavy machine guns and the famous firearms inventors. Then it has separate chapters covering the weapons used by every country in the world including weapons used in previous years, then the current weapons. Earlier editions may not cover many later weapons so the later editions will probably be better. Each countries chapter shows the weapons starting with the service pistol, then rifle, auto rifle, SMG, light and heavy machine guns. Each is fully described and shows photos of disassembly and notes on it's variations and models, use and maintenance The second is the two volume "International Armament" by Johnson and Lockhoven. This was written with the support of famous (infamous) arms merchant Samuel Cummings who formed Interarms. Cummings was a major arms seller and buyer in the post war period. Most of the military surplus rifles and pistols of the 1950's and 60's were imported by Cummings company. He was so big, he could purchase the entire supply of a countries older arms inventory and sell them new arms, import the rifles and pistols into America or sell them to Third World countries and sell them the full auto weapons too. He could also supply and buy armored vehicles, heavy weapons like artillery, and aircraft. This two volume set starts out with chapters on the history of firearms, then has separate chapters on revolvers, automatic pistols, single shot rifles, bolt action rifles, semi-automatic rifles, Assault rifles, light machine guns and heavy machine guns. Included with each is a full history of the development of the arm, how it works, how to disassemble it, who made and how it was marked, and a short time line of who used it and when. The book includes accurate drawings of the design of the operating systems. This also has been reprinted and can also be found on Amazon and Ebay in both original and reprint versions. These books are considered to be absolutely necessary for any military small arms library. |
