| Has anybody on here read this or the follow up ones? Was really underwhelmed with it but hear that the next ones in the series are significantly better and I'm unsure about taking the plunge. If you haven't read them, it's a supernatural military thriller. People have manifested the ability to control magic and the initial use it usually uncontrolled, violent, and damaging to people and property. A branch of the military has been stood up to "deal" with the threat of this and when you manifest your ability you have two options, turn yourself in, or be killed out of hand by the military. So all in all it's a good set up and the world is interesting. Myke Cole seems to have some trouble writing his main character, completely unlikeable, flip flops wildly between being ok with being a prisoner in a concentration / reeducation camp and is an active supporter of it right up to the point where people are mean to him and then he yaws back to the other end of the spectrum. So I guess the inconsistency with the character really took me out of it. Ground my way though the book hoping it'd be better and then was at the end all frustrated, which was too bad cause with the exception of the main guy it was pretty well written. Just cuirous on if I was the only one that thought that and what anybody else's $.02 are. |
