| What would be a couple of good ideas for an 80 yr old retired engineer who likes current events and maybe science fiction paperbacks old or new. |
|
John Scalzi's Old Man's War and its sequels. One of the secondary characters is an engineer and it's about old people who sign up for military service on their 75th birthday and enter an inter-planetary defense force.
The engineer side of him may enjoy Joe Halderman's The Forever War if he hasn't already read it. Lots of theory math on faster than light travel. The 80 year old part of him might enjoy the cultural impact of being centuries old and wondering what the hell the world has left for you if anything. |

Off Armaegddon Reef, David Weber. There are three others in the series. Empire From The Ashes was excellent as well.
