I know there are locking straps out there, but I've grown to like my Levy's strap. So, does anyone know how to add locks or otherwise better secure an existing guitar strap?

I own and have used both extensively, and each have their pros and cons.

Schaller:

Pro - VERY secure. About the only way for them to fail is for the screw to break or rip out of the body.

Con - Harder to manipulate (especially with sweaty hamds). Can be used with a strap without locks installed, but will slip off easily,

Dunlop DD:

Pro - Looks like a standard strap button (albeit beefier). Works just like a standard strap button with a strap without locks installed.

Con - Tecnically more prone to failure because of the ball lock mechamism (but I've never seen one break).

Personally, I'm using the Dunlops. They fit my style now.

But if I were still doin' the heavy metal thang I would use the Schallers with extra-long screws.

I believe I use the dunlop kind. You press the button in to release the lock. They work great and I don't see them falling apart any time soon.

Sounds like you are asking how to implement staplocks on your current axe.  Very simple project...

I have the Schaller staplocks so I can only comment about those.  The strap lock has one piece that bolts to the existing strap though the hole the button on the guitar normally passes through.  The other part replaces the standard button on the guitar.  They are just screwed on using the existing holes/screws.

My Strat had the Schaller style posts installed when I got it.  Had to buy the strap buttons though.

Here are some photos of the Dunlop Dual Design straplocks on my Strat.

Tomorrow, if I get a chance, I'll dig out a set of Schallers and post photos showing how they are assembled to the strap.

The Dunlop DD buttons are very much like standard strap buttons (albeit slightly larger), except that the centers of the buttons are machined out to accept a ball-and-plunger locking mechanism. They're secure to the body in the usual way, a screw through the center.

The lock fits onto the strap through the existing slot, and is secured by a C-clip (the Schallers use a threaded nut). The flange and washer are large and will not pull through. The release button is recessed into the flange and would be hard to push accidentally. I've never had it happen, but then I don't play rough with my guitars like I used to.

The Dunlop release button pushes in, the Schaller is pulled out.

At the bottom of the page are links to larger, more detailed photos, but those are not exactly dialup friendly.

Looks like I may have spoken too soon.

I went to retrieve the Schaller straplocks and they were nowhere to be found. I did find a spare set of Dunlop locks, so I know I was looking in the right place.

Now that I think about it, the Schallers may have been thrown into in a box of misc. guitar stuff I gave my son awhile back.

Sorry.
