I am on a search for a new guitar, and it appears the Dean Hardtail Select would be a good choice for an intermediate guitar. I thought about the epi les paul standards and they may still be an option. Also, I played an American and Mexican strat, but I wasn't overly impressed. My friend has a PRS SE singlecut, and even though I like it a lot I don't want to have the same thing he does (we are in the same band). The Dean seems to be comparable, and when I spoke to the factory about them, they seemed to be very polite and helpful. So what do you all think, would a Dean Hardtail Select in a Tiger Eye color be a winner for what I'm doing?

Thanks,

Mike

I don't know much about the Dean's other than I don't care for the headstocks.

What kind of music? Sounds like you prefer humbuckers to single coils? What about a different PRS or the ESPs?

Also, if you're still thinking about the Epi standard LP's you might look at a Gibson LP studio or a faded SG.

I had a Dean Vendetta 3.0. It was well made and had zero buzz / hum from the pickups. The factory Dean pickups however leave something to be desired. (weak). Which is the main reason I sold it.

ESP uses Duncan pickups in their middle / upper end guitars with the most popular combo being 59 / JB. The build quality is first rate and can be picked up used for less than either of the guitars you mentioned.

I'd stay away from the Epiphones. They use bodies that are a Mahogany/Alder mix & they sound like crap. They used to use solid Mahogany for their Custom & Elite lines, but have started to put alder in them too.

From what I understand, the Dean Hardtails are solid Mahogany, so they should have good tone, even better with some custom pickups.
