So I was at Nationwide's place tonight fooling around with his new Line 6 Spider. This amp seems to have all of the effects you'll ever need built into it and it has tons of preset sounds. It's basically an all in one package. Loud, it's flexible, it sounds awesome and it's relatively inexpensive.

So, is there any reason why I shouldn't buy one?

The presets are pretty shitty.

If I were you I'd save up for a cab/power amp/pre amp setup since you already have an amp at the moment.

The Vox valvetronix seem, to me,  to be the best sounding amp of this type on the affordable end.

I think they're kinda like the POD, okay for foolin' around, but not something I'd want to gig with.

I'll never need anything that big. I just need a good combo amp. My amp is OK, but I can't get a sound that I am really satisfied with out of it.

I played on two amps yesterday. Nationwide's Line 6 Spider III and a Peavey Bandit 112. They both had REALLY good tone. Better than what I get now anyways.

You sure?

You seem like you're writing a lot of stuff lately. You can use combo amps to create signature tone or even to record properly.

If you just want an amp to mess around on, then combo amps are the best way to go.

If you intend on writing music, recording it and selling it. You most certainly want to look into a complete rig, otherwise everything you record is going to sound very sloppy and digital.

Well, I don't have any aspirations of ever doing more than having a Myspace page and/or a web page where people might could download some of my music.

But, your point is well taken. My main goal is to get people to listen to my music and enjoy it. Since it's going to be guitar centric music a good amp is probably going to be the cornerstone. The biggest I would ever need though would be a half stack. I'd also need something that I can crank up the gain without having to crank the volume too much either.

Maybe one of those single channel Mesa Boogies. I guess I'll have to start playing some different amps to find one that I like.

Then I'll need a pre-amp to cut down the noise...this is gonna get expensive.

I love my Spider 1x12 75watt amp. I've played several live gigs with it (mic'd of coarse), and I've had several people come up to me after the show and ask me about the amp.

I think it's one of the best solid state amps out there that emulates that tube "feel" that most solid state amps just don't have.

I've been wondering about the Spider Valve amps......thinking about getting one of the 2x12 combos.

Anyone placed on the Spider Valve amps?

It does. Power amp section designed by Bogner.
Saw someone mention the peavey bandit 112 up above. That's one of my favorite cheap amps. Great great great loud clean sound. The distortion channel is ... meh ... but don't use it for that. Run some nice pedals into it and you get a kick ass sound at a dirt cheap price.

Did you mean to say "You can't ..."? If so that's a pretty controversial claim. Maybe it applies to metal sound? I'm pretty clueless there, but in general you can get a combo to sound fine at just about anything.

Everything Stevie Ray Vaughn did was through a Fender combo. Eric Clapton used a Marshall combo back in the 60s. I know there are others, but that's all that comes to mind at the moment.

Yep...combo's sounds just fine. I think the half-stack stuff is way over rated.  When just about every place you play shows at has a PA system.....you don't need a 4x12 cabinet with a 300w head sitting on top. I've played several gigs with my 75w Spider II 1x12 combo mic'd through a PA system....and it sounded as good or better than the guys with the half-stacks. You don't need all of that volume (and pain in the ass of moving it around) of a big half-stack if you are playing at a place that has a good PA setup.

I was at the music store the other day & was asking the guitar guy about the new Digitech GSP1101 (I'm looking at different effect processors for my rig right now) & he told me that he went to a Queensryche show the other night & Michael Wilton had one in his rack. He also said that he couldn't see any other preamp or amp head except for a power amp, so apparently Wilton was using the Digitech for the whole shebang except for the power amp. The guy at the shop said that it sounded just fine & he couldn't tell it wasn't an actual amp. So, that may be an option for you. If it does sound good enough, you can get an ART Tube MP to go direct into your computer, that'll warm up the sound a little too & you won't need to have a power amp right away.
