I'm trying to buy a Telecaster neck pickup to put on my National copy.

How can one tell the difference between a real fender and a cheapo?

Ask for pictures of the wiring, you can tell if it was resoldered.

I believe Telecaster pickups are American Fender Tele pups therefore should have a serial number on it.

If it doesn't absolutely have to be an origional, there are some well made aftermarket/reproductions out there. Such as Seymour Duncan or Fender themselves.

I'm just trying to figure out how to buy a Texas Special or an American off of Ebay and make sure I dont get a Squire.

squires say squire on the headstock.

ETA it should also say made in USA somewhere on it, see if they can get pictures of that.

OK Brainiac! Did you even bother to read the OP?

It may say Squire on the headstock, but after the PICKUP which is what we are discussing here is removed from the guitar and offered for sale by itself, it becomes a little bit harder to tell exactly what it is.

Yeah I wouldn't worry about it TC, I don't think anyone would remove those pickups. Generally stock pickups are of the lowest bidder.

How much are they going for in Ebay? I see Musician's Friend has Fender Custom Shop Texas Special Telecaster pickup sets (both neck & bridge) for $170.
