Any Music Educators/Band Directors out there?  I have the opportunity to get new marching percussion.  Non-competitive HS, a few parades, no winter line.  Would you recommend Pearl or Yamaha?  They are both about the same in cost (with careers/cases).  What are your experiences?  Thanks in advance.

Are you going to be competing with them?

I'm just a dad that had a kid in the marching band for 8 years... she played clarinet but I was in the pit crew and had to schlep that stuff to shows and competitions. Those things were heavy.

I know the band director was always trying to get new heads... and the kids weren't the most conscientious in putting them down... they never really dropped them (intentionally) but they sometimes didn't set them down nicely.

I think the band used Pearl or Tama... I don't know which and don't remember. I know they sounded a little "off" when compared to some of the 4A and 5A schools that could afford the better equipment. I don't know anything about music but I'd suggest that you'd choose the ones that sound the best and go from there.

I know Yamaha makes good musical equipment... but Pearl is the choice of several rock bands.

Is there a chance you can get the school to play the instruments for you while you listen at a distance to see which sound best?

No competitions.  Just a small school.  Great idea about listening to them from a distance.  I'll see if my local dealer will help with that.  Thanks!
