There is some superb musicianship on this album... Larry Carlton, Denny Dias, and Phil Woods, in particular, turn in epic performances. This was my favorite Dan album for a long time.
Unfortunately, as my equipment and listening sophistication improved, I discovered the horrible truth: equipment problems in the studio, some of which were related to early adoption of dbx, resulted in a flawed album. On many of the tracks, vocals sound distant, and there is little detail in the high end. And one of the tracks that was recorded for inclusion on the album was deemed unusable.
These problems are not severe enough that they're noticeable to everyone, and I can still, usually, make myself forget about them enough to really enjoy the album.
I'm listening to it now, and while I still think of it as one of the best albums that I have heard in terms of songwriting and musicianship, I can't help thinking about what might have been.
