I am in no way an Aviation afficianado (I have no idea what is wrong with any of those pictures). But I do like to see cool stuff flying. So I am driving up the mountain to Boone, NC and I notice a low flying chinook in the valley. It was dropping pretty fast and had a cable hanging down. Initially I thought it was some kind of mountain rescue as the helo was painted red and white. I have never watched a chinook land before but this thing dropped pretty quick and in an uneven "see-saw" methode. I pulled up closer and parked to watch as it landed right in a clearing in the valley. Some guys ran up and hooked someting that looked like an orange traffic cone to then end of the cable that hung off the chinook. Then it takes off again and starts to hover over a nearby mountian top. It lowered a little bit and then came back up with THREE TREES ATTACHED!!!. It flew over to another clearing in the valley and dropped the logs for some trucks to pick up. Then popped back up to repeat another pickup. I didn't know that they used helicopters to do logging. It looked really cool and really dangerous. I'm sure winds between mountains can really screw with an aircraft. And it must be some really expensive lumber. I will have pics later in the week when my wife gets home with the camera. |
