http://avstop.com/news_march_2010/ge_engine_testing.jpg C-ya!!! To be fair though...the PW engines up until the 229 blew. Seems pretty much unanimous that all the Viper driver's prefer the GE over the PW (not saying that the F135 blows, but it's turned out to be a good thing the Viper had GE's as an option) Well yes, they've always sucked.... and blew. Suck squeeze bang blow! Pratt & Whitney has always been making dependable engines, but to say their motors prior to the F100-PW-229 blew though is pretty uneducated. There's a reason the BUFFS and E-3s are still using engines that are probably well into their third decade. I will say Pratt has overcome obstacles (fall of '03 anyone)? But they've been in business for a long time, doing good work. P&W has also ALWAYS been better at taking care of their employees than GE. |

I should have specified, the Viper PW engines were substandard compared to the GE ones. Talking directly so buddies of mine that fly the Viper they back it up. There's a reason why Luke has 220s...they're a huge piece of shit (compared to the GEs and the 229s), and the Luke jets aren't combat coded. McEntire/Mt Home (back in the day) and half the jets at Nellis are 229s. 220s and 229s are freaking night and day.
The LARGE majority of combat-coded Vipers are powered by GE, and anyone who's flown in a 220-powered Viper knows exactly why. |

Most of the jets left at Luke are Blk 42's with the 220, which is a PIG! The 229 is a MUCH better engine, with a lot more power! My first flight in a 220 jet after flying the 229 for so long, I thought I was having a low thrust EP...it's crazy the difference few thousand pounds of thrust can make. We have a guy in the squadron that has flown every block of F-16 from the 10 thru the 50/52 including the 15MLU. Flew PW 200/220/229, GE 100/129. He said down low he prefers the GE129, up high the 229... His favorite block, however was the 15 (220), plenty of power for the older light airframe...BFM machine! Alot of the old timers prefer the old small tails, for BFM anyway. |

From a civvie maint standpoint, the only Puff and Wheeze motor I don't mind working on is the JT8, other than that GE and RR build superior products. Lol at that statement. The RB211 gave the L1011 the nickname "twinstar". Doh! The RB211 basically killed the L1011. |
