I just got a new humidor, thought I had it all set stogies all settled in.  My humidistat was saying it was 60% and I wanted to kick it up to 65%-68% range after some reading on proper humidity.  I decided to adjust the humidity up a little higher by leaving the sponge with distilled water on it in for a day or so to see if it would bring it up a bit.

This is where things go terribly wrong.

The sponge was accidently touching the top tray and started growing white mold on the bottom of the tray.  Luckily, there was no damage to stogies on that part of the tray as I still had those in wrappers.  I've pulled the tray, all stogies from top tray, no mold in the rest of humidor.

How do I get the tray sterilized of the fungus proper before putting it back and going about life?

What is the best cleaning solution/method that will kill the mold without damaging the spanish cedar?

Any good ideas appreciated.

update:

No need to panic...

I hit it with some distilled water and a touch of alcohol to kill the fungus.

Rinsed it all good and everything seems good as new.  Letting air dry in the light for a day and wipe it down fresh when it seems back to normal.  .

The wood is real squishy as it sucked up a LOT of water out of the sponge.

Hopefully it doesn't warp or damage the tray.

We'll see how it goes.

Agree, white mold in humidor, clean it off with distilled water and alcohol, it will be fine.
Blue-green mold on cigar, especially in the foot, IS BAD.

The end where you light the cigar is known as the foot.  The end you suck on is the....head.  The part you clipped is the cap.

LOL got ya.

I've been to a couple of herfs in the area, but I never heard that term before.

No mold in the box or on the stogies since I caught it.

Tray delaminated when it dried out.  So I've left the tray out until I can repair or replace .

Just went out and smoked a Camacho Connecticut out of it.
