Alright, I don't really plan on doing the work myself unless it is possible.  I am more wanting to know what to expect and what is involved in replacing a pane and figured this would be the best forum.  The window is a 2-year old, double pane, low e, single hung, vinyl unit.  I must have thrown a rock while mowing.  The top outer fixed pane is cracked/busted and moisture has gotten in between panes and starting rusting the metal inside.  The window is a 6/2.5 window.

My questions are:
1) Will the entire window unit have to be replaced or can they just insert a new sealed double pane to replace the broken one?

2)  Any idea on the costs involved?  I am sure labor might be a regional thing, but maybe the glass is too, I don't know.  I just would like to hear a ballpark number to think about.

3)  Lastly, is this something that can be done DIY?  I am pretty handy and do all my home maintenance myself, but I am unsure about doing this.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

FInd out who made it, call them, give them the dimensions of the glass and and outer dimensions and let them just make up another one.

If you are talking about replacing a fixed pane, it isn't that big a deal. There are usually trim strips on the outside that you peel off, then an adhesive tape that holds the pane in the frame. Talk to the lumber yard or whoever sells the window about getting a new pane. As far as price, I have seen a small 30x30 or so unit go for about $35 or so, and around $200ish for a bigger 5'0x5'0 or so. It has been a while, so I don't know how accurate those prices are at this point.(or how accurate the information is either.) You may end up breaking the trim strips when you pull them out, at least the first one 'til you figure out how.

I would bet that it would be significantly less for the pane unit than the window, and there is less labor involved in replacing it as well.

You said vinyl - some manufacturers seal the IG unit in the vinyl housing.  Others use screws to retain the vinyl frame together.  Call your local glass shop.
