This project has been in the works for a couple of weeks now. The gas fireplace insert has been purchased and I have the plumber coming to extend the gas line next week. I broke out a brick in the side for the plumber to bring in the gas line. I was expecting a cavity before reaching the exterior plywood. Instead I hit a piece of sheet metal. This is a 30 year old wood burning fireplace. I assumed it was real brick but it appears to be 2" thick brick "panels" on both sides and the back, with metal mesh behind. What should I expect behind the sheet metal? Can I just drill through it for the gas line or will I find some additional masonry? All I have left of this project, I hope, is drop the exhaust/intake down the chimney, attach the cap, install and level insert and attach vents and gas line. Install the decorative front and I have a new gas fireplace. |
