Hello,

I'd like to work on a project where I need to bend some ~1" steel tubing, or round, haven't decided yet.

My question is this, what's the best way to bend tube/pipe on the cheap? I'd used the el cheapo pip benders from Harbor Freight, even filling them with sand, and they only ever pinched or creased.

Any ideas?

Buy am EMT bender for one inch.

It will give you about as small a radius as you can get without 'tricks,' like filling the tube with low melting point metal, bending it, then melting it back out (think the stuff used for chamber casts).

I'm with brickeyee;  a 1" EMT bender will be relatively inexpensive and should bend ... get ready for this ... 1" EMT ... quite well.   If you had "kinks", you either wern't bending the correct pipe in the correct bender OR you were bending with your arms and were not using downward foot pressure.  This allows the tube/bender up off the floor and kinks result.   If you're in Miami, I could probably loan you one.

Stay safe

How thick is the steel you are trying to bend?  If it's thick, you might want to step up to a 1 1/4" bender, and even then it might be too thick to bend manually.

Most fab shops here get $5 a bend and a lot of shops have "2nds." for next to nothing.  What is the O.D. and wall thickness?

It'll probably be up to 1" square or round tube, probably about a 1/16" thickness. I'd like to make something like those cargo baskets that sit on top of trucks. Nothing super heavy duty, I think that EMT Bender might just be the ticket.

You can also buy steel pipe butt weld fittings. They are made for welding without the threaded portion. You can also use pipe welding conneters to help put your project together. Bottom pic. Any pipe supply house can get these and they are inexpensive. I am sure the pipe fitters on this forum know these all too well. They may be just a little too thick for your application.

A muffler shop can bend light tubing for you too.

I'll have to look into that, thanks for the advice!
