I painted my roof 3 yrs ago and started noticing paint peeling about 1.5 yrs ago. Regardless of metal type and directional face, about 20% of the paint coverage is failing. Paint: Sampson Weather-Brite, Exterior Direct to Metal, Acyrlic Gloss- Dark Green Roof Material: 1903 Tin & 1970's galavanized metal Prep: Wire brushed, wiped clean, (Primer only exposed galvanized areas) It was a summer project, but no rain or extreme temps. I doubt humidity was an issue, and if temp was an issue wouldn't certain exposures and the high points show the most fail? This is a quick cure paint, so I would expect what was painted at 6AM vs 2PM to contrast if temp was the issue. Primer was used on the galvanized roof only. So where might I have gone wrong? How about oil, epoxy, latex, or another acrylic paint? Thanks |
| You could have contamination issues. You may not have fully removed acid rain, oils or dust residue from the surface before priming or painting. On any metal roof systems I've dealt with, the surface has been thoroughly power washed with chemical cleaners to remove any contamination. As with any paint or coating, surface prep is probably the most important variable to insure proper adhesion. Also, I've never painted a metal roof, it has all ways been refinished with a coating system of some sort. Jon |
+1 surface MUST be prepared first. Then top coat with XO Rust |
