I recently built a shop building. Now that the weather is warmed up, the wasps are starting to come around. I've noticed them inside looking for places to make their mud nests. I want to prevent them from developing nests if possible. The shop is fairly tight but there are places for them to enter. The siding and roof is metal so there are some tiny gaps where the little bastards can enter. Any good tips of keeping them out or preventing them from wanting to come in? I'm going to go get some wasp spray but that might not be enough. |

To Kill them: Anything by Hot Shot or Raid which includes the words HORNET and KILLER in the name (that way you know it'll work fast on anything To keep them out: I'd get some Great Stuff brand expanding foam as it's good for filling voids, comes in a can, squirts out a tube, puffs up, and hardens ... shutup.Hope that helps. Just be sure to ventilate; I'm pretty sure the bug spray is loaded with neurotoxins . Have fun wing shooting. |
Place cigar lighter in front of WD-40 nozzle, proceed.

| I don't see how it can explode from a chaseback without the right mix of oxygen inside which would take a really empty can if it could occur at all. Perhaps from heat bursting the can? But that would require the flame to be really close to the neck for a while. You sure the can didn't catch on fire and he just stood there and watched until it exploded? |
I knew a guy who was welding under a car and there was a can of WD40 next to him. It exploded and burned the crap out of him. Thanks for all the tips. The spray seems to be discouraging them. I'll look for the traps. |
Now THAT doesn't surprise me, hot slag would pop the can in a heartbeat. |
No worries, WD-40 has been reformulated to satisfy the greenies and CFCs were removed, and propane is not the propellant anymore. It will NOT act as a flamethrower anymore. I've recently had to resort to using old cans of spray paint as a flamethrower to get those pesky beasts. |

I remember reading that if you hang a piece of raw fish (not rotten) over a pan of soapy water, you'll kill most of the yellow jackets in the area. When cutting off chunks of fish, they often fall. If they fall into soapy water, they die. I don't know how effective it truly is, but it's a neat idea. RF |
In my previous life, when bees set up shop in bulldozers and the like, we would don backpack sprayers filled with soapy water. Kind of felt like a poseur-ish Ghostbuster. ![]() As always, it's important to remember to not cross the streams. |
