My AC/heater filter is 20x20x4, but I can't find them locally (yet), so can I use 4 20x20x1?

Order a new one on the internet.

Yes you can use a 1" but they don't fit in the housing real well and can tip over easily.

ETA - Reread your original post, I missed the fact that you want to stack four 1" filter, that is a no no. Just use one 1" until you can fins the proper 4".

I have seen it done...Your unit will not be happy if it can even pull the air through a stack like that...My neighbors unit, "Just isn't heating right since we put in new filters??" They were using the 1 is good so 4 is better method...

Using the 4 stack , 1 inch method is not the same as the orignal 4 inch filter.

The 1" filter will still have a flat surface, that will need to be changed out more often than the 4" filter.........has the accordian look to it, more surface to catch dust and dirt.

It is better than nothing until you can find the right one though.

Menards and home depot now carry 4" filters. Maybe lowes too.
