I am remodeling my kitchen and was think about installing a tile floor. The question is do you install the cement backer board with thinset to the subfloor or will screws do?

Yes, I would.  Thinset between the backer and underlayment.  Use screws too.  Be sure they are flush.

I have also used construction adhesive.

You definitly need to thinset between the cement board and the existing floor. Then be sure to use PLENTY of screws to hold the cement board down, I usually try to put screws in an eight inch grid.

Also if you have any squeaks in the existing floor run some 3 inch screws in where you hear them, otherwise you will never be able to rid yourself of the noise and if they're bad enough you may pop tile or grout after the floor is finished.

good luck!

Thanks for the replies. It looks like it's going to have to be laminate, I just priced out the cabinets and countertop and blew my budget.

Too bad you can't find the money for the tile.  The Kitchen is one of, if not the biggest re-sale or appraised value rooms of a home.  If you can do it yourself, tile is not too expensive.

If you decide to do tile, you should do a deflection calculation of the subfloor first.  If you are good to go and decide to use Hardi backer, you definately need to use a modified thinset that meets ANSI standards for wood bonding inbetween the wood and Hardi-board or any other cement type board (CBU).  Then screw it down like others have mentioned every 6-8 inches.  Screws are cheap insurance, so don't be afraid to use a lot of em.

I use both. I want to reduce the chance of movement / flex in the substrate as much as possible to prevent cracking in my tile jobs.   LOTS of screws.
