I have built a center console out of styrophome and I was wondering how do you go about fiber glassing it? I already have the fiberglass patches and the fiberglass resin with hardener, any suggestions would be great fully appreciated.
Thanks

If anybody has any other Ideas on how I could make it stronger I would love to hear them.

just lay strips over it, then carve out the foam after the FG hardens. chop mat is good for building strength. 2-3 layers will be plenty. Then bondo, sand smooth, & cover in vinyl

the foam sounds like a great idea, I actually need to do the same thing in my boat.  As for the fiberglass just mix up your wet stuff and dip the glass mat in the goop.  Theny you can lay the mat on your foam.  Like someone else said 3 layers should be plenty.
You can bondo once finished and sand and paint just like you would anything else.  Good post by the way.  Post a pic when done.

Make sure your resin is compatiable with your foam, otherwise it'll "melt" the foam.

I've *heard* a thin layer of bondo will keep the resin from eating the foam, but I've not tried it -- I always just bought compatible foam and resin.

Styrofoam will be eaten with polyester resin.  You can use epoxy over the foam or paint the foam with latex primer.

also wrap in tin foil or plastic wrap

Just saw this thread... might be too late. But, I have some videos you can download that show how to do fiberglasssing. They are kind of crappy quality, but it was done by a guy that makes fiberglass parts for kit airplanes and he shows you a lot of a cool stuff.

Its ok, I went up to answer the phone and when I had come back my rottwiller had a field day with it. He is only a year old and is wild a hell.

Just saw the thread also  what you can do if it is pink foam or blue is spray a layer of latex paint on top of the foam,  this will allow the foam to be protected so then you can spray either a coat of normal primer and or a Fiberglass gel resin

if you get the oppertunity, take the extra time to make your foam shape nice and smooth, and when you lay the fiberglass try to get it as smooth as possible. It may not look like it at the time but you might end up adding a good quarter inch of bondo to make the surface look even... which sucks...

Out of curiosity, what have you all made out of fiberglass? I've been toying with the idea of making a custom console that would add-on to my console in my truck. Mainly to add in a slot for my rechargeable flashlight and to be able to just drop my IPod into a slot and have it dock up with the cable.
