I've had a Reese locking hitch pin on my truck for years and it's never given me a lick of trouble.
Well, I was rear-ended on Wed and despite destroying my beloved BFL receiver cover, there wasn't any apparent damage. However, I went to remove the remains of the cover and can't get the pin to unlock. The key turns but nothing happens. I'm wondering if the impact damaged something inside. It was suggested to hit it with penetrating oil and warm it up with a propane torch. I can't find my torch head but WD-40 (can't find my penetrating oil either) didn't do anything. I'm about to just take the reciprocating saw to it and have the lady that hit me buy a new one. Any thoughts? Anyone cut one off before? I called Reese and they said it shouldn't be hardened so I should be able to get it off destructively if necessary. Just figured I'd ask before I destroy it. |

I had a newer reese lock pin that was on my truck for about a year. couldnt find my key, of course it was the same day I had to get my camper and of course the wrong hitch was on it.
i drilled out the lock with a small carbide bit then worked up to about 1/2". I drilled through the lock where the key goes. came off pretty easy. |

Ah, didn't think of drilling. Might give that a shot first.
ETA: It's done. Drilled the lock out in a few seconds but it didn't come apart. Hit it with the saw and I was through it in about 5 seconds. Almost makes me wonder if it's worth it. I was really expecting it to at least take some effort to get it off. |
