My friend is thinking of selling his 1990 Yamaha sit down ski. It's sat outside (So.Cal, so the weather isn't horrible) for the last 12 years not touched. I was thinking of slapping a battery in and seeing if it starts. Is this a bad idea? Do I need to do anything else before trying? My friendad thinks it will just need a battery, change the plug, and a tune up. We have not discussed a price yet.

Does it use pre-mix or separate oil and gas tanks? Either way, I'd probably look at trying to change the fuel and oil out for fresh. Your carbs are probably also gummed up unless they were properly winterized.

It may very well be worth zero or even negative.   Go price running jet skis on Craigslist from that time period, they are cheap.

If it needs a top end probably not worth taking for free.

If it has a trailer, I would not trust tires that old no matter how good the tread is.

LOL! It's going to need all the fluids (oil and gas) removed, fuel system cleaned out, carbs rebuilt and all the fuel/oil lines and water hoses changed out at a minimum. So. Cal is similar to Arizona and in my 13 years as a boat mechanic I've yet to see a "derelict" boat/ski that didn't need all of this done.

You may get it to run by just draining/adding new fluids, but it will probably run lean (due to dirty carbs) and burn a hole in a piston under load.

Did it sit with any water in the hull? Was it used in salt water before it sat? Corrosion is a big issue too so be aware of that.

Chances are good the "bellows" where the shift and steering cable pass through the transom are rotted and need replaced too.

It just sat on the side of his house for years. I may offer him $100 just so I can fuck with it.

Even $100 might be a bit much. You haven't specified the exact model, but Yamaha's best ski from 1990 is only worth $1,000 now if it's in perfect running condition.
