I've got a 25hp Kawasaki FH721V engine on my mower, and the battery isn't charging. Output from the stator is around 36v AC, and stator resistance is measuring at .4 ohms, when it should spec out between .01 and .1. Output at the voltage regulator is around 10.5v DC. I'm trying to figure out which is the problem. Does stator resistance higher than spec indicate a problem with it even though the output voltage is fine? I'm stupid when it comes to electricity and would appreciate any input.

What is the voltage on the battery?  I'm suspecting you are reading battery voltage at the rectifier output.  Normally they get about 35-45vac input and then put out about 13.5-14.5vdc output.  The output usually only happens ad long as the rectifier "sees" a battery attached.  Also make sure the rectifier has a good case ground or it may not work.

I'm going to say your rectifier is bad since it had a good AC input.  Those few tenths of an ohm in resistance are nothing to really worry about with a system like this.

I am basing this on my experiences with Kohler, Onan and Subaru/Robin welder engine repairs.  But the Kawi is probably similar.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping that's what it most likely was. Edit to add: the voltage had dropped below 12 when I tested everything. It was steadily discharging while I checked it while everything was running.

Is it a known good battery? No dead cells?

I'll have to get it tested, but it's a year old.

Get it checked. Sounds like a dead cell to me as fast as it is losing charge.

I'll do that over the weekend, thanks.
