I have one of those Lowes $699 trailers. 5'X8"

Heck lowes had them $100 off around the 4th of July. And I got 10% Mil discount.

So I got mine for $550OTD. Love it!

But I am sure there are mods that can be done. I use it to haul my kayaks around mostly.

I want to make my ramp a bifold like this.

has anyone does this mod?

Wood floors are heavy.

I'd mount a winch on the front for pulling dead mowers and other crap onto it. Weld some D rings along the rails for easy tie down points.

Install landing gear on the tongue for easy unhooking while the trailer is loaded if it doesn't already have it.

How about some sort of spare tire carrier?

Getting it that cheap, the first thing I would do to it is put a electric brake axle under it if it doesn't have them.  Best 'mod' you can have on a trailer...

I'd have to agree with CobraXP, if you're towing it with a small car like a matrix (I'm a matrix owner as well), it will greatly decrease your braking distances.  But that's kind of an expensive proposition and if you're towing lightweight stuff it's probably not worth it.

Aside from that there are a few other things you can do.

  • Do you need the rear ramp?  If you don't take it off.  If you do, can you get by with loading ramps instead (You can integrate them into the rear of the trailer to act as the "tailgate")?

  • Check the wiring of the trailer, ensure good ground connections (most common issues with these trailers), ensure all wiring is in loom (harbor freight is a good place to get this with a 20% off coupon - google HFQPDB for a 20% off coupon to use), ensure all wiring is in retaining clips so it doesn't hang loose and drag.

  • Ammo can storage, or a tongue box, can store tie downs/gear/fire extinguisher, tools, and extra wheel hub (you do have one right?) and be lockable.

  • Spare tire holder

  • Tongue jack (On something this small no wheel is needed, I'd get one at harbor freight and use a coupon for it.)

  • Receiver lock

  • Tire covers (for when you store it, UV will destroy those tires)

  • wheel chock

  • racks (if you really need them, if not go without)

what all do you haul with it beyond the kayaks?

I do not haul a whole lot.

But for $30 a year its nice to have.

Tire covers will be made, thank.

I am wheel chocks.

A tongue box would be nice. But there is not a lot of room for turning.

I like the box idea, but most of the mods mentioned are sort of worthless on such a light duty trailer. Use it and enjoy it, but don't put much in it. Some of those are only 1k ish capacity, that can be like several wheelbarrow loads of dirt. Great for bikes, lawnmowers, bark, garbage. I would be really careful cranking on ratchet straps.too.

The best thing about light trailers is that they can be rolled.around by hand to park them... easy to get them out of the way.

I have a lowes trailer.  I flipped the axle and put some old ford rims on it.  I'm going to rip out that shitty mesh floor and put 2x12s or 2x10s on it(I know it will add weight but the mesh sucks and sags)and add the recessed tow hook rings when I do that.

got a crappy tongue jack from harbor freight, trailer only weighs 350lbs.

going to buy a shitty spare tire carrier from harbor freight also.

going to weld some angle iron on the front so I can put a small box up there.

one of my lights crapped out already so i'll be putting led lights on it.

had it about a year.
