I'm building a downstairs bedroom and and would like light with LED recess lights.  I would also like to add some to my upstairs living room.  I want both to be dimmable.

What is the best route to go?  Standard recessed light fixtures + LED bulbs, or are there stand-alone recessed LED light fixtures?

Standard can and LED lamp. Driver is in lamp. Easy to service.

Regular can with trim/light combo

Costco has 4" 520 lumen and 6" 1300 lumen led modules for cheap

How hard is it to mount the cans in a ceiling if you can not access from the top (i.e. first floor of 2 story)

You may need a shallow ceiling housing, and the wire may have to be fished through the ceiling frame.

They make what's called remodel cans or old work cans. They're designed to be wired up and then snapped into the hole in the ceiling. Installing the can is easy, getting the wire to the can will probably be the hardest part.

THIS.

Cans were about $7.50 each.  Got these bulbs:

Lowes,... but get a coupon first

They dim awesomely.  They are a warm light. NOT blue.

Yup that's a damn good price

Remember with LED the lower the number the more warm/Yello the light

2700k vs 3500k and so on

I'm using these in 4" cans I just installed.  My circuit is shared with a chandelier over the table that is also on a dimmer but with incandescent bulbs.  With the incandescents dimmed it sometimes causes the LED's to flicker, and especially if they are dimmed down.

You will need to switch to the "Lutron" dimmer to make it work right. Easy to do.

Thanks!  I was looking at the retrofits on Menard's website and thinking that was the way to go.  I'll have to see if I can get over to Lowe's for the $7.50 ones.

I went this route...
Kitchen remod and put in the Halo cans...then, bought a bunch of retro LED kits from Costco. Had to install the Lutron LED rated dimmers but that was part of the remod. I also put in about 14' of under cabinet LED fixtures. Pegasus lighting is the go-to online shop for fixtures...for just cans, HD or Lowes (Halo)...for LED bulbs, Costco 2-packs for $20 right now.

I also switched in incads in the bedroom and family room, both had 6" cans...

I now have 16 LED retro flush mount kits in four areas of the house. Really like them, no issues except maybe they will not dim as much as an incad...A minor issue.

Note: shallow cans may not accept the LED retrofit kits...they are a little tall...check them out

Yes...look for the 2700 to 3500 for warm light.
And look for the CRI number. 100 is perfect sunlight...good LED's are 90/94...I would avoid low 80 CRI numbers.
CRI = color rendering index

I put in five inch cans and finding affordable, bright LEDs has been an issue. Put in six inchers if you can and it will broaden you selections a BUNCH.

I have the same issue with one of these Utilitech lights. 6 of them in the basement and one likes to flicker when I dim the lights. I think I'm going to take them back and either get the ones from Costco or else buy baffles and LED lights separately.
