I have a fairly new (circa 2013) Kenmore HE top-loading washing machine. I do not see a model number on it. It has all dials for controls, no little screen, just a strip of LEDs. It has worked perfectly until now.

I was doing a small load of laundry when the machine stopped during its spin cycle. The red "door locked" LED was illuminated. I pressed the button to try to pause the machine, but nothing happened. I held it for a few seconds to cancel the cycle, and the light went out and the door lock released.

Now the machine won't do anything. When I plug it in, I can hear a faint sound like it is running normally, but no LEDs light up.

I read online a bit about a diagnostic procedure involving turning the dial left and right several times, which should have lit up the LEDs, however when I do that the LEDs do not light up. I have tried unplugging the washer many times for up to ten minutes, and then re-trying the diagnostic dial procedure, but still nothing.

Any ideas? I try to learn how to fix things myself when possible, but I don't know anything about these machines. Would love to learn and understand it however.

(It is 0220 and I am off to bed, have been up for 2 hours playing with the darn thing, will be digging out my warranty paperwork in the morning.)

Same here: I have a similar washer (different name, same washer) and I'm interested in fix so I can file it in the "for future reference" pile... OP, please update when you solve the problem.

I have some great information for all of you!!!
Posting this for everyone's benefit, then an update...

I found this video on YouTube showing the identical washer to mine, however the video shows a Whirlpool.

There is indeed a hidden cache of repair info inside the machine! The guy in the video does not tell you where to look, and it is a little tricky.

Follow his directions for removing four screws from the back of the washer. Then awkwardly slide-lift the top of the machine off as he shows in the video. Don't be scared of breaking something, the wiring harness has plenty of slack and the parts are made to do this.

If you are standing directly in front of the machine, bend over and stick your head down in the left front corner. Outside of the drum in the center there is a space between the drum and the outer shell of the machine. The packet you want is near your left knee at this point, inside the outer sheet metal shell of the machine. You need to tear out the plastic pouch, being careful not to rip the papers inside.

You are then holding the full self-diagnosis and manual check sheet. You are awesome and hold the power to hopefully diagnose most problems with your machine!

I followed all of the instructions for diagnosis via the front panel dial and LEDs. I got no response, not a single light, nothing. I checked the fit of wiring pieces that I could see and all seemed tight. Still nothing. I did not proceed to get out a multimeter and start disassembling the machine as the "hidden book" suggests. I was afraid I would either break the machine or break myself....or void the warranty.

I called the Sears Home Store where I bought the machine. They directed me to call Service at 1-800-469-4663. I called and was walked through a bunch of voice prompts. It was not as slow and painful as the voice prompts when I call my bank. I was connected to a "technician", which seemed to be someone reading a list of questions to ask me and then typing my answers. I told her everything I posted above here in this thread. She then said it sounds like the control head module, or some such named thing, was malfunctioning. It would take about 5 business days for the part to reach my local service provider. To me that was reasonable (but not to my wife!!!) so I said sure, let's go forward with this. It is covered under warranty (she said I chose the Master Protection Plan, which I am surprised at because I rarely say yes to such things, but I am glad I did) so there will be no charge, and they will do more for me if this one repair visit does not fix the problem.

There you have it, with more to follow.
