We have a need to make a gate for the deck on the house we are renting (toddler and dog).

Because of the location of the gate I have been contemplating a sliding gate . . . but don't see any hardware anywhere that is for a small gate.  Does anyone here have a direction to point in?

Not a driveway gate.  gatedepot only shows hardware appropriate for a gate to close off your driveway.

Think a gate to keep your kid from tumbling down the outside steps.

Yes, I will keep looking at hardware stores, but I have yet to run across anything.

Well . . . .  no.  They have nice door hardware, but a gate that is only waist height cannot work on that as far as I can tell.

Interesting. I have a raised deck but I don't want the dogs up there, (they can see other dogs to bark at). But I just used a standard swing open gate at the top and bottom of the stairs.
The sliding door would work on the top location for me but not the bottom. Maybe google child safe gates or something similar?

I used a Saftey First stairs locking gate that gets bolted into a stud on both sides (In your case piers) and has a double locking mechanism.

I'll try to find it later when I'm home.

At the top a swing gate would be in the way, no matter how I mount it.  A gate I could slide would work because it would be out of the way and the other side, up against the house, doesn't have to have a perfect fit.  The lock mechanism could be rigged on the other side.

Maybe use pocket door hardware and track to rig up something.

or use this retractable gate.
