[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Torque Wrench Conversion Question

OK... I'm embarrassed to say I've never used a clicker type Torque wrench. With that, here's my question.

I need to torque some bolts at 17 ft lbs. My torque wrench is in inch lbs. Can I crank my inch torque wrench up to 204 inch lbs (17x12") and use it? Would this be as effective as having a ft lbs wrench?

just dont get too close to the limits on it if you need accuracy. and be sure to crank the setting back down under 20 in lbor so after you are finished
