I found an oak sprout that I believe is so young that I was able to dig up without damaging the tap root.   I'm planting it in my front yard and see how it goes.  I was curious if anyone has transplanted a sprout like this with any luck? I hear oaks are difficult to grow from anything beyond an acorn.   I'm giving it a shot, the only thing I've yet to decide is how elaborate I'll make a place for it in the lawn.

Not sure if you can tell from the photo, but you can see the acorn at the base of the sprout.

Behold, the mighty oak!

I had one sprout in a potted plant that I tried to grow.
It didn't make it past mid-summer.

I don't have any oaks on my property so I imagine it was a gift of the squirrels.

My original idea was to leave it in a planter and baby it for a while before putting it in the ground.  But I've learned  that they grow a tap root which, under ideal conditions, can go as deep as 5 ft within their first year.  If the tap root is damaged, they're a gonner.

I recovered some oak sproats after cleaning out some gutters, put them in the ground, watered, they're doing all right, 1 got mowed down, fogot to tell the nieghbor, before he cut hay, but it came back. So put that puppy in the ground, and tell your grandkids about it.
