I just finished tiling our fireplace surround with travertine. Dude at the tile shop said to seal the travertine before I grout. Is this correct? When I did the bathroom floor(ceramic) and counter(granite), I was told to seal after. Is this because the travertine is a more porous stone. I would think the sealer would give less adhesion for the grout?

Yes it's much more porous than granite.  Seal first then grout.  It will make cleanup much easier,  Also, remember to seal after grouting.  Make sure you get everything off of it before you seal the second time or you will seal it in.  You are only sealing the face of the stone, not the grout joints.
