I've got another "Am I dumb" question.
I'm thinking about getting one of those dual zone mini-split systems. I'd put one zone in my bedroom and one in my home office. I figure that this would allow for me to let the house float more at night and allow for the room with all of my servers to be cooled correctly. Do you think that this would hurt the re-sale value of my house since it already had a central heat pump? |

long as it's done right, and aesthetically pleasing, don't see why not. You might be surprised, but those mini splits go for 2-3k.
I'd see if one of the cassette style splits works for your application - that way you don't have the traditional supply vent mounted on the wall. I've seen a few disguised as picture frames. |
Poor resale value would be knocking a hole in the wall and installing a "window unit" type
You MIGHT consider getting one of those 110v portable AC units like this: THIS My FIL picked one up to use out at the lake in his little "shack" while the house was being built. It would require no permanent alteration to the house and even 2 of the upper scale ones would be cheaper than a split system plus install. Even the DIY ones from Home Depot are over a grand. |

Being a parasite and jumping into this thread.
I am getting estimates for installing a 9,000 btu, 26 seer Mitsubishi heat pump mini split system into a 300 sq. foot room addition. Our current ac service company that installed and maintains our central system is quoting $5100 to install the system described. I was expecting $2000- $3000. Is $5000+ way out of line? Also, please comment on Mitsubishi units or suggest other brands? Thanks, Dave |

Thanks, Dave I just had that exact unit started up in my workshop, the unit cost was around 2200 bucks and 150 for start up with me doing the install. Depending on the layout of the room, how far the refrigerant lines need to be run, and the 240V line to the outdoor unit, I could see 2500 bucks in labor for a finished room. There is a 4 wire shielded cable between the outdoor and indoor units run with the refrigerant and drain lines for the unit. 240V 15A supply to the outdoor unit. You may want to get a second quote, but the exchange rate screwed me out of 300 bucks from when I initially got the price, and if it's even worse, and there are install gotchas, they may be at a fair price. Hope that helps. |

Hope that helps. Thanks, I have a couple of requests to other ac companies for estimate comparisons. So far 2 others I have talked to directly want to come and test the room to first see what size unit I would need. "Well, you see, the room isn't built yet, I just need estimates to help figure my budget." "No problem, just call us when the room is done and we can come test it." "Repeat, I am looking for estimates to create a budget. Can't you just give me estimates for 9,000 and 12,000 btu units?" "No, we need to test the room." "Thanks for the help, bye."

| Know that if you install anything yourself, unless you know what you are doing (i.e. you do this for living) you run the risk of throwing money away. Plus, all warranties are void. Quote might be a little high, but then again, summer is here, you need to get it done off season for best prices or for anybody to give you accurate quotes. |
