I've replaced several, but now I want to install a ceiling fan in my office. Currently it only has a "normal" light fixture.
Is there anything I need to do to the existing box in the ceiling before installing a ceiling fan or just remove the light fixture and wire up the new ceiling fan?
House is 1950s construction if that helps

You will almost certainly need to take out the old box and put a brace in to hold all the extra weight if the box isn't already on a joist. If you can get above it in an attic it's really easy if you cant they sell  bars that you can slide up in the hole and expand out to the joist on either side.

What he said.  Go to any type of store and ask and they will show you.  They have both "new construction" and "existing structure" type boxes.  Both are easy to install and NEEDED to support the weight.

x3. Ceiling fans didnt really come around strongly untill the late 70's/80's. Our house which was built in '74 did not have adequate bracing and was replaced with the aforementioned aftermarket braces. They are super easy to install and you dont even need to get up in the attic.

Any suggestions on a particular brand or what to look for in terms of ceiling fans?

I have 3 in the house I moved into.  Not sure how old they are.  I'd like to replace all them.

1.) Bedroom one makes too much noise (rattling despite tightening everything down) and doesn't really throw around any air.

2.) Dining area super quiet, but doesn't throw around any air.

3.) Sun Room throws around more air than #1&2 but is super loud.

Obviously try to find one that produces a good deal of air yet remaining relatively quite.

I have three Hunter ceiling fans I ordered off Amazon for about 40% less than what Home Depot was going to charge me.

I've installed Hampton Bays before (the rediculously decorated insane pain in the ass ones with the light ABOVE the fan) and those mounted to the box in the ceiling.

The Hunter fans, however, mounted by driving screws up THROUGH the drywall and into the studs underneath.  I don't want to type it all out so I'll link to the product and you can find my review under W3ap0n-X.

Ordered a 52" from Amazon.  Should get it Tuesday.  Gonna replace the one in my bedroom 1st since I hate the noise it makes plus lack of air movement.
