OK. I have  a Trane XE90 gas furnace that is acting up and I'd like to fix it myself and spend a lot of money I don't have.

I'm not getting heat from the unit consistently and it locks out after 3 tries.
Blower kicks in and ignitor glows then fan kicks in gas fires up then shuts off after a second or two. This happens 3 times and then it locks out. But this doesn't always happen. Sometimes it'll run until the temp reaches desired thermostat setting. When it goes to fire up again it'll lock out.

I have cleaned the old flame sensor and that didn't work, so I replaced it. That also didn't work. All the vents are clear and filters are clean.

My next change out is the control board. Not cheap but a heck of a lot cheaper than the HVAC guy.

Any ideas?

if the unit is shutting down, its because  of a control. could be any number of controls and someone would have to see what you have. the bad thing is
most newer furnaces only have electronic controls that are in the board. so sometimes all you can do is replace the board. a trane mechanic should be able to test the board but that will cost you. and the really bad part is that its a trane. which means, most likely you not going to be able to even purchase the part unless you personally know someone who is a trane dealer. trane uses parts specific to their machines, so there no generic replacement parts for say like "american standard" (which trane makes but uses generic type parts).

first i would see if YOU can even get parts. if you can (which i wouold be surprised) i woudl probably swap out the board because even though its not going to be cheap, alot of the time thats the problem. just realize that you are rolling the dice if you cant have the board tested. because IF you can even get a board you will NOT be albe to return it.

hope that helps, and if im wrong on any of this, please soemone chime in (i just finished HVAC school recently and am still learning).

I'd suggest an IM to the moderator of this forum (ZW17), as this is his field of expertise.  Hopefully he can help.

Update on my HVAC. I got a new control board without a problem from a local supplier and it was fairly cheap. I searched the internet and the cheapest I could find was $114 plus shipping. I picked mine up for $135 I did make sure to take my time when I switched them out. Pulling each wire and putting it on the new board then crossing my fingers when I turned the power on. So far so good. The strange thing is only a few days before my DVR went out. I had to replace a few capacitors on the board by doing some soldering. So my wife is happy that she got her TV back in the room and heat down stairs.
