I have a mower with a 20 horsepower Kholer Courage engine. Last time I used it, it ran fine. Today however, it cranked and ran like shit for about 10 seconds and died. Try to restart it, no dice.  So after looking around i've figured out that I have good spark, gas , no blown fuses and a good strong battery. While checking things over however, I pulled the air filter and noticed it smelled like gas. So I tried to crank it again just for kicks and noticed gas coming out of the intake of the carb. My question is does anyone know what may be causing this and how bad am I skrewed?

If gas was literally flowing out of the carb, it sounds like time for a carburetor rebuild. I'm going to guess that either the float has gone bad or it got some trash between the needle and seat. Either way, I'd say $20 max for parts and an hour or so to do the job.

not Kohler, but might help

Yeah, perhaps if I had put down the beer something that simple may have dawned on me.

Does the oil smell heavily of gasoline?  I believe there's a fuel cut-off solenoid for these motors mounted to the bowl of the carb.  Supposed to keep from flooding the carb until the key is turned on, opening the fuel supply.  Check that out.

No oil in the gas. The solenoid seems like it's working fine. I believe the float's hung on the carb and thats causing my problems. I was just way over thinking things yesterday.

How long has the gas been sitting in the tank/carb? If more than a month or two your carb probably needs cleaning/ rebuilding. This new ethanol gas goes to hell in as little as a month and gunks the carb jets up. Carb cleaner will not clean it, it needs to be dissembled and run thru an ultrasonic cleaner for a few hours. Ask me how I know?

That's where I believe the problem came from. The mower was only run a week befors this happened, but the gas I put in it was over six months old.
