We live in a 1921 Craftsman style bungalow that has exposed eaves similar to this home:

Well the wasps LOVE it. They make their nests in the open eaves.  I saw several hunting around today looking for a good spot. I vaguely remember someone washing the outside with Dawn dish-washing liquid soap as a deterrent.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to deter them?

wasp traps is what I use, like a bee hive, you catch the queen and the hive dies out, the queens are out early, soon as it starts to warm up, once the nest is built, they dont move anymore
I bought 2 traps at the hardware store, uses apple juice and raw meat..catch's yellow jackets, and mud daubers
my traps are up!

also in once upon a time it was standard to paint the ceiling on porches light blue or light gray, seems the wasps saw it as SKY and Clouds, you cant hang a nest on a cloud..

Yup, get a wasp trap and get it out now.  Early spring is when you catch the queen –– later on you'll just get the workers.

I used one of these last year and had to empty it 3 or 4 times. It worked GREAT.

An exterminator told me to spray the surface with liquid sevin. It won't kill them but they will find another place to nest. ETA do it now before they start nesting.

That stuff is great. I use the powder for around the perimeter of the house.
