I think we should have a tacked thread in our Movie Forum specifically for Blu Ray player question or recommendation's.
I have seen a dramatic increase of threads, which is great for communication's sense, but tends to clutter the board. I don't blame people for the search function here, or the lack there of. Tacked threads always help! That being said, I would be honored to have a thread of mine up there! My question, how is the latest BR player on sale at best Buy? It has the Wi-Fi feature I was looking for, what do you guys know about this model? BEST BUY BR PLAYER Edit: This is a 2 month tack, we'll see how it fares.. BA |

Insignia is their store brand. Its good to go. I bought a 50" plasma for 600$ its great. WiFi-I don't need it for my bluerays if you see a need -go for it My need was to try and step into year 2K and get Netflix. Getting a BR with WF is a plus My mother has a 32 Insignia that she loves. Great HD picture for what they use it for. I just needed the BR blessing from the those with more experience then me. |

I looked at a few BRD players before Christmas.... I discovered a few players will interface to the interwebs with built in netflix and other services (Pandora was one of them, and I have interest in this) I'm torn between a stand alone player and getting a PS3.... I'd also like to ditch my cable tv service and stick with downloaded/streaming content and DVD's. There are so many different ways of doing this, it's hard to figure out a cost effective way that won't break the bank. |

I still suggest picking up a PS3. It's a very versatile machine.
Downside is it has a fan that can be a bit loud when it comes on. Upside is you can play games on it, store music, surf the web on it, put LINUX on it, and a host of other stuff. It upscales DVDs very well (I know standard Blu ray players can too), with some nice customizable controls. |

I'm in the market for a BR player right now, and have been debating the pros/cons of PS3 vs standalone player for a couple of weeks. I'll never, ever play games on it, it's an ugly clunky looking thing to add to my very elegant entertainment center and midrange audio gear. I have no interest in putting linux on it, and I hate Sony. I already have a very good (Oppo) upconverting DVD player. So all that said, I really wish Sony would release a version of it with WLAN, a small SSD, and the basic feature set of the PS3, but with a better form factor and an included remote control but no game controller. Of course they are afraid of cannibalizing their own market share with it. I've all but decided to go with a Samsung BD-P1600. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882676133&cm_re=samsung_bluray-_-82-676-133-_-Product It does netflix and youtube streaming, doesn't have a WLAN adapter built in (I don't mind running a hard line, and it can use a wifi dongle via USB), and from most accounts the picture is good and it isn't as glitchy as some. If Sony would make my "video optimized" PS3 for ~$200 it would be a no brainer, but I have a hard time spending double the price for extra hardware I won't use. Decisions, decisions... p.s. True to form, none of Sony's standalone BR players will stream netflix, they love their proprietary shit those Sony boys. |

What? Yes they do. I bought one for my mom for Christmas. http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665968161 More than a Blu-ray Disc™ player, the BDP-N460 allows you to instantly stream thousands of movies, videos and music from the largest selection of leading content providers including Netflix, Amazon Video On Demand, YouTube™, Slacker® Radio and many, many more. Plus, enjoy the ultimate in high-definition entertainment and watch Blu-ray Disc movies in Full HD 1080p quality with HD audio. |

I've had one of those for about 6 months now. It is an excellent BR player and the online streaming works great. Just make sure about one a month or so you check for firmware upgrades in the set-up menu. I think I've had to load about 4 upgrades since I bought it. |

Quoted: Glad to hear you like it. For $150 it seems like a decent player for my needs. About the only consistent complaint I have read is slow disk load times, have you noticed that? It seems to be a common problem with most players, and honestly a couple of seconds doesn't bother me. A couple of minutes would. I've had one of those for about 6 months now. They're slow to load, that's for sure. Seems it takes even longer when it's pr0n I don't know about your player, but my Sony has a setting for "quick load". Only problem is that it keeps the player in standby, so the fan has to stay on. More wear and tear, and more energy consumption, so I don't have it on. When it is on though it's sub 6 seconds for loading. |

I got it for $150 when it was on sale at newegg.com. It does not have built-in wifi which may steer you away from this model, but for me it's a non issue since all of the rooms in my house have RJ-45 outlets. |

I bought a Plextor external BluRay drive for the laptop and my office computer.
I use the laptop as my Netflix streaming device in the living room, I hook up the player to my office computer to watch BluRay discs. Now all I need to do is buy an HDTV for the living room.
