Anyone seen or seen any reviews? I have even less hope than before since they didn't have a screening for critics.

Yes, I understand that may be an affront to the GI Joe we all know, but I was hoping that maybe that was an exaggeration and that someone who saw it (someone braver than I) had some insight.

Yea, thanks, but, I looked on rotten already. I was hoping someone here had some input. When I first heard about it I was excited, however as things developed, like most here, I've lost interest. My initial enthusiasm may have put me in an uncomfortable position with the wife. She still talks about seeing it. I'v tried to be polite about the possibilty that it may not be a good movie, but she loves going to the theater/drive inn. Guess I'll have to man up and tell her its gonna suck and it will be waste money. I may have to compromise and take her to see Funny People.

I caught the 4 pm showing today.  I purchased a ticket for Funny People but walked into GI Joe instead in order to deprive Mr Sommers of more distasteful US currency.

It was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be.  Yes, the action is ridiculous, over the top, and implausible....just like the animated series as I remember it.  There were a couple of fairly funny jokes, and a lot more that fell flat.  I had high hopes for Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Cobra Commander, because I think he's a very talented and underestimated actor, but he did nothing unique with the role.  It was much more violent than I expected.  Not graphic, but people definitely died.

The anti-American aspects of the film that I expected really weren't present at all.  Obviously the references to 'Real American Heroes' were omitted, but Americans were clearly in the lead throughout, and there weren't any scenes where we were portrayed negatively.

Most importantly, Sienna Miller looked incredible as the Baroness, and Rachel Nichols showed off some fantastic cleavage more than once.

They definitely captured the fun spirit of the cartoons.  When Hawk pulled the "Knowing is half the battle" line, it put me in the right frame of mind to see the rest of the movie.  I enjoyed it.

I heart Rachel Nichols.    I'll have to let her know we're now dating.

For the shit I expected it to be, I walked in with low expectations and walked out much more entertained than I thought I'd be. I liked it. Let's see what they do with the sequel(s).

Cobra Commander was nowhere near as bad as I thought he'd be based off the leaked image of him I saw. Baroness and Scarlett were damn fine.

It was a bit kiddish and brought back some memories, but problem is, we, the kids that watched it, are adults now. Transformers balanced realism and cartoonishness a lot better. The movie wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but I'd still only give it a 6 out of 10.

the action was good and all
thats all there was...
but it wasnt in a good way, it made the movie have no detailed plot and just seemed like a four year old would understand it completely.
some parts were pretty cool.
alot of the animation was really bad, you could honestly beleive you were watching a(hardcore) 3d disney movie at some points
in all honesty it isnt worth going imo.

MY REVIEW.  Probably the most favorable one that will appear on ARF.

I went to the matinee today with an open mind, hoping for a creative re-imagining of the childhood stories.  It delivered!  I really enjoyed this movie.  (As high school science fair judges are instructed, judge it for what it is not for what it isn't.  You cannot reasonably expect to see a movie the way you imagined it in your head as a child.)

FWIW I did not pick up on any anti-American sentiment.  The essence of American character was consistently portrayed as strongly ethical.  Also, it's worth pointing out the leader of the Joes is still a white American male, and a plurality of the Joes are American citizens.  I was somewhat uncomfortable with the black stereotyping of Ripcord, but Heavy Duty was well done.  Ripcord was just annoying throughout IMHO. The actor did not seem to "fit" with the movie.

I am mindful of giving plot spoilers so I will only say that in terms of setting, the scenes in Paris were my favorite. They contained very creative and fun action.

Two actors really stood out in my mind as particularly fun to watch.
Christopher Eccleston - of course Destro is safely a Scottish villian rather than one of more timely/sensitive nationality:

And Lee Byung-Hun as Storm Shadow:

He is a huge Korean action star best known for "The Good, The Bad and the Weird" and "A Bittersweet Life." He is probably the best-known actor in "G.I. Joe" and he had a lot of screentime highlighting his martial arts skills.  I am sure this is to appeal to the international audiences for $$ purposes. He is also the only actor to have the obligatory fight-shirtless scene, immediately bringing to mind this from "The Good, The Bad and the Weird":

I reserve the right to edit this review for spelling, grammar or more pictures of Lee Byung-Hun.

I also liked it.  I went into it much like I did with Transformers:  I'm watching GI Joe.  And, yes, it's GI Joe.  Set your suspension of disbelief up on the High end of the scale, pretend you're 10 again, and enjoy it!  But, let the adult side of you enjoy Baroness and Scarlett!  Those two (miller and nichols) definitely 'fit' in those roles!  I'm waiting for the NC17 Baroness and Scarlett's Pillow Fight Sponge Bath sequel!

I was glad to hear some of the lines, like 'knowing is half the battle'.  It was also neat to see a bit of the original 'costumes' come out, Scarlett in Paris on the MV Augusta is a good example.  While I didn't care for the powered armor concept, it kind of fit in that over the top Joe way.  And yes, it is violent.  I was fully expecting a lot of explosions with no one getting hurt, and the cartoon's classic 'eject right before the missile hits' stuff, but damn...These guys are serious, lots of people dying, some rather graphic for a PG-13 flick.  A fair amount of mild cursing as well.  And the Snake Eyes-StormShadow fights were pretty good.

That seems to be the position of the majority of reviewers in this thread and the one in GD.  I am amazed that there are so many people that haven't watched a movie, won't watch a movie, but know so much about a movie.

Watched it yesterday.  It wasn't perfect, but it certainly met and exceded my expectations.  There was no flag burning, they didn't put a bald eagle on the grill, and nobody took a dump on the grave of Ronald Reagan.

The main character is US Army and he is smart, strong, loyal, and overall pretty badass.

The rest of the team are mostly American and are clearly in line with traditional American values.

Baroness/Scarlett/Covergirl are freaking hot.

Storm Shadow is great and Snake Eyes is Darth Freaking Maul.  I didn't lose any sleep last night because his mask has lips.

They did a great job of "throwing some bones" to the cartoon history with the "Knowing is half the battle", "Yo Joe" lines and a scene w/ Sgt. Slaughter.

There are characters that die that I didn't expect to, but I could see how we were just supposed to think they're dead and could be written into a sequel.

The ending of the movie really makes it feel like a prequel, in a good way.  We have an establishment story to set up a franchise, and the next movie should take up right about where the cartoons took place.  Commander and Destro have their masks, Duke is becoming the team leader, and Zartan is getting ready to cause some serious problems.

I saw it w/ my 16 year old nephew yesterday and may go back today if my wife wants to see it.  It will do better at the box office than expected, because the word will spread that the movie is a lot of fun and the critics and those that haven't watched it that have some sort of hard on to trash this movie are pretty much full of shit.

I pretty much walked into it expecting it to be a movie I might not even sit through and I sat through George Romero's "Land of the Dead" so I'll sit through a lot of crap.

It was ok in the end. Not worth buying on DVD.  Not worth more than a matinee. It was silly and good popcorn fun. If you switch off your "realism" expectation and recognize it for what it is than you'll be fine. If you're expect Dark Knight like character development and story line you'll be really disappointed.

I'd give it a 7/10.

Meh, it was better than I expected, despite some cliche plot moves, and despite that Wayne brother's best attempts to ruin it with shitty slapstick.  If nothing else it was better than the old cartoon.  I mean, you can't have too high expectations for a movie about a toy from the 80s.  One screw-up that I haven't seen mentioned yet is that they kept calling Duke a Captain, yet in the flashback to "4 years earlier" he clearly had gold oak-leaves on his dress blues.  Did golden boy get demoted?  Temporary commission?  No one in Hollywood knows what gold oak leaves means?  Although I do have to say that if they make a sequel they had better give the Joes some better vehicles.  Cobra had all the kick-ass stuff.  The Joes had some stupid jet version of an Osprey.

I guess I'll weigh in on this one.

I saw it yesterday w/ my kids and wife and was less than impressed, other than the two hotties of course.  First off, in the beginning scenes when Duke and Ripcord are transporting the warheads and are attacked, I see that the vehicle they are traveling in is a freaking Hummer H2.  WTF??  There are several others in it as well.  I figured GM found a way to rid themselves of them.

Also, it was made PERFECTLY clear that they were a NATO force.  NATO was said so many damn times I wanted to scream, "I get it!!!"  They placed "great american hero" in a scene w/ Duke proposing and Ripcord making the comment that Duke was "a great american hero".  BTW, no "Great American Hero theme song".  And, yes, I was annoyed at how it was commented that GI Joe was made up of top soldiers from around the world.  Kind of makes it NOT GI Joe.

I also had to laugh at their hi tech super rifles.  FS2000's.  WOW.  My son commented that I used to have one.  Does that make me a GI Joe??

The plausability and CGI weren't that wonderful either.  At the end when Commander blows the icecap above the polar base, Hollywood apparently forgot that ice FLOATS and doesn't sink to smash underwater bases.

As we were driving to see it, I mentioned to my wife about what I had heard about it and what changes were made.  She asks me why we were even going to see it.  And my oldest son seemed even unimpressed.  He's 9 and pretty much into military things and realism.

AS a child growing up back in the day remebering watching every episode possible of the cartoon and now with children of my own watching it on the big screen it brought back some interesting memories. Overall to me personally it was ok. Not something I would go back to watch again.
And I always thought "DUKE" had a thing for "SCARLET"......

I know I was.  I mean, part of this franchise's history involves a cartoon episode where they retrofit their weapons to shoot apples (or tomatoes I forget which) in order to attack a giant blob of bacteria.  It doesn't get any more real than that!
8/13/2009 6:17:53 AM EDT

They should have just followed the storyline from the comics. Issue #1 could have easily been expanded into movie length and updated a little with better weapons. Then they would have had a great movie without the gayness.

Give credit where it is due. There was some great acting in that movie!

How they got those lines out with straight faces is beyond me.  I couldn't have done it.

Funny, just about everyone who saw it said it was better then they thought it would be, yet tons of people who haven't seen it stay firm that they don't watch it.

I guess it all balls down to if someone was a fan of GI Joe or not... Obviously it isn't going to be realistic, but then again James Bond movies aren't realistic and everybody loves those.

I'm going to rent it, only because I've stepped foot in a theater twice this year, which is twice more than I usually do.

The 3.75" GI Joes were my favorite toys as a kid. I will try to divorce one from the other and enjoy it on it's merits - like the movie and book of Jurassic Park.

If you compare the movie to the book, you will hate the movie. If you accept both for what they are, on their own terms, you will probably love both.
