I managed to score a 23" Dell monitor (older model with DVI, RGB, S-video and composite inputs, but not HDCP-compliant) for a song, and I would like to use it to watch DVDs. I've noticed that upconverting DVD players will only use that feature if connected via HDMI cable, but is that upconversion protected by HDCP?

If upconverting to 720P is protecting, will the <720P resolutions (576P or 480P) work over HDMI?  Does HDCP apply to data CDs (DIVX, for example)?
