Going to get my son a TV for his room. Looking at the 26" or 32" vizio at w mart. They have the 32" in led or plasma for $20.00 less. Any thoughts?

you mean LCD not LED.
vizio is pretty low-end. i don't know much about their plasmas but their LCDs are usable but not great.
compare the resolutions, response times, contrast ratios, input/ouput jacks, and such.

I have a 42" Vizio LCD in my living room and it looks great. I'd gladly get another one if I were in the market for a TV.

The LCd is going to have a smoother image, but the Plasma will have better contrast. Plasma's are generally known for having a true "black", not a grayish color like most TV's.

Depends.
At high altitude plasma will wear out faster.
A plasma will normally have better color.
A plasma will usually have better contrast.
Plasmas usually have a shiny screen, not good in well-lit rooms.
LCD's have a matte screen.
LCD's are generally lighter.
Many more...
Many many more...

Hope that helps.
Just got a new TV.

It's technically an OLED and also the only one of its kind, for now.

My buddy does too. It's not the best picture I've ever seen, but it looks great none the less. They get the job done for a more economical flat panel. I wonder what their lifespan is though, it will be interesting to see how they hold up.

Bright room or lots of sunlight I would go LCD. If you can keep the room darker than plasma.

My father in law bought a sony lcd close to 2 years ago. Now a message is coming up on the screen that says it's time to change the lamp.  He called the place he got it from. They didn't tell him he'd have to change the lamp out every so many hours. They wanted $200 for a new lamp.
An electronic tech. I worked with said the plasma's were susceptable to screen burn. I guess each one has their good & bad points.

Plasma is know for faster refresh rate, darker black until LCD improve it technology with the 120hrt refresh rate, some new model from samsung black rival that of plasma,

other + for LCD is that it ligther, more engergy efficient and also cheaper ^^.

newegg this website offer great deal on computer and electronic related. sometime free shipping and tax free ^^. it is one of the best website to order electronic from online, don't beleive me, just ask all the geek and nerd that you know about this site.

You most likely have an DLP, type tv. A true LCD doesn't have a bulb.

If your TV room is dark all the time, like a basement room for instance, go with plasma.

If it's a room with a lot of sunlight coming in all day, go with a LCD.

I sell tv's and I would reccomend an LCD over a plasma. A plasma will have blacker blacks and whiter whites but the difference anymore is minimal. Also the plasma wont last as long and is much heavier. Also to comment on the Vizio, it definately isnt the quality of many other brands that will be close in price. There is a reason why Walmart and Sams Club sell it so cheap. The old saying that you get what you pay for is still very true. The best thing that you could ever do before buying a tv is to call 5 reputable repair companies and ask them what they reccomend. They know what brands and styles have characteristical issues and will be the best source of advice, not a bunch of people that want to justify to themselves that they got the best thing out there. Not trying to insult anyone but its usually why someone reccomends something.. Good luck

I totally agree that LCD is the way to go.

What I don't understand is why anyone ever recommends calling repair people. (I was in appliance / tv sales for almost 6 years). Repair people depend on people buying things that are going to break. If you ask your repair person, they are far more likely to tell you to buy the products that it is easy for them to make money on.

I've got my Panasonic plasma in my well lit living room,no problems with glare. Anti-glare/reflection tech has come a long way in the last few years.

Also the energy cost thing is overblown. The costs are estimated from MAX draw. An LCD set draws its max rating at all times while a plasma fluctuates depending on the brightness of the scene displayed. A darker screen demands less power. So a 325 watt LCD may actually use more power than a 400 watt plasma running the same movie. Not to mention the fact that even while its turned off an LCD is drawing up to 10-12 watts to render the screen black so that the LED or ELP back light isn't visible. Its around 0.5 watts for plasma.

And heavy? Yeah a comparatively sized LCD set may weigh 15-20 lbs less than my 50 inch plasma. Regardless, its not a deal breaker as its not something I tote around with me all day, actually very rarely move it.

Lifespans of plasma these days generally meets or beats that of LCDs. 60,000-100,000 hrs.

Burn in? If you're in the habit of leaving the set paused on a static picture for 10-12 hrs at a time it most likely will be an issue. Not the problem it was 3-4 years ago.

Did I forget anything? If so you can find it here- AVS Forums

Plasma.

LCDs have problems displaying high-contrast scenes, and the picture quality varies considerably when viewing the screen from an angle. Plasma looks consistently good, from any angle, on any scene.

BTW, 42 inches is just about as small a Plasma set as you're likely to find.

The difference is not minimal.  Plasma has a much better picture than LCD.  Out of all the Plasma and LCDs I have installed the plasmas look better every time.  The ONLY time I use LCD is in an area that will have a lot of light during viewing hours, otherwise plasma all the way.

I've heard good things about Vizio's and I plan on buying either the 42 inch or 46 in LCD.  I think Consumer reports rated them well.  My brother bought a 50 inch Samsung LCD which is nice but cost quite a bit.  I think although they are not the best if you compare them with other name brands with similar features (1080i, same refresh rate, etc.) they hold their own.

YOu don't get out much.  The latest LCDs have such a high contrast ratio that they have made plasma obsolete.  That is why plasmas are so cheap now, they are being dumped off by retailers.  FYI, you can get a high end LCD with a million to one contrast ratio and they no longer have matte screens. Even 50000 to one contrast is impressive and affordable. I just bought two Samsungs.  I definately did NOT want the heat of a plasma in any of my rooms in my climate.

Plasma is going the way of beta and 8 tracks.

Dont buy a Vizio from Walmart, thats where Vizio sends their lower-end models vs Costco and other warehouse clubs that get the higher-end models. Of course you'll pay a little more, but you'll get better performance.

Copy the model numbers off the boxes and check them against the manufacturers' websites.

I also sell TVs and I have just bought a Samsung 46inch 9 series LCD.  I dont like Samsung that much normally, but this TV really stood out as being the best.  Seeing how I sell TVs, I got it at cost price too .

Plasmas still do have a better dark picture, however the higher end LCDs are getting very damn close, especially the LED backlit ones.  Alot of the LCD TVs actually have much nicer colours than the plasmas.

Contrast ratio numbers are total BS imho.  The 9 series supposedly has a contrast ratio of 2million to one...completely inflated and BS!

Plasmas most definetly use alot more energy...the airconditioning went out in my store a few months ago and you could definetly feel the heat coming off the plasmas, while the LCDs werent so bad heatwise

I got a panasonic Viera 46" plasma for 950, simply because in the price point I was shopping in (sub 1k), it was the biggest I could get with 1080P, and also IMHO looked better than any LCD I could find that was 46" and under 1700 bucks.

While it is true that LCD's can now in some cases match the plasma's in terms of blacks, etc...you're not going to be able to do it cheap like you can with a plasma.  In time I'm sure there will be 46" LCD's that are better than plasma's for under 1k, but that unfortunately was NOT the case when I was shopping.

I just bought a 46" Sony Bravia LCD.  It's awesome, IMO.  My brother says it has a better picture than his Samsung plasma.  Not scientific, just a user observation.  The problems with LCDs and plasmas have been pretty well worked out now, and technological advances continue to make both styles better and better.  For instance, the blacks on my LCD are great, and my brother's plasma shows no signs of burn-in.  Plasmas do put out more heat than an LCD, and generally weigh more, but who carries their TV around with them?  Plasmas and LCDs both weigh considerably less than old tube TVs.  My 32" Sony Wega CRT TV weighs about 135 lbs.  My 46" Sony Bravia LCD weighs 67 lbs., with the pedestal attached.  Much bigger TV, and about half the weight.

Most 26"-32" TVs are LCDs, and you get what you pay for in terms of quality and service.  Keep this in mind when purchasing new TVs.  Information is everywhere, so it's easy to make an informed decision.

We forgot to hit "play" on one of the TV displays, so one of the plasmas has burn in now.  We left it for about 30mins, and the things burned in were not of a high contrast difference.

Plasma can burn in if you leave it on the same screen.
