Half Life:

You play Gordon Freeman, a new hire at a top secret labratory in the American Southwest desert. You push a mineral sample into a machine that rips a hole in the universe and allows all these crazy aliens to come in and start killing everybody. Finally the Marines arrive, and start killing the aliens, and all the people who have seen them. You then go to the other dimension and kill the alien leader. Then a mysterious man puts you in a stasis field.

Its sequel was only the single best selling PC game of all time excluding WoW...
