I first heard of Equilibrium in discussions on this site. After looking for I don't know how long, I found a copy in Best Buy for $9.99. Impressive gun play. The Gun Kata was pretty cool. The thing that was a bit of a downer for me was the anti-Christian symbolism. The order that was charged with preventing people from enjoying art was called the Tetragrammaton. Not too subtle. Symbolically, that's like saying God doesn't want you to have fun - that He just wants us to be passionless robots. The killjoys, of course, were Clerics in service of the Tetragrammaton. That aspect was similar to "V For Vendetta" for me; someone in the writer/director/producer foodchain let their anti-Christian paranoia slip in and spoil an otherwise good story. The Lefties try to use fearmongering like this. They say that Evangelicals want to create a theocracy here in the USA. They use that silly term, "Christian Taliban." That kind of propaganda is Marxist at best. It's the kind of thing one would hear if Michael Moore did a "documentary" on Christianity. Action: Thumbs-up. Plot: Decent enough for a thumbs-up. Uberkool gunplay: Thumbs-up. Effects: Thumbs-up. Villains wrapped in Christian terms: Thumbs-down. Four out of five thumbs. |
I know what you mean. Over the years I've loaned out countless books that weren't returned. I'm thinking about getting one of those stamps that libraries use to emboss a page in the front of a book. It will say, "STOLEN from the library of Brohawk." |
"Tetragrammaton" is the word for God's name when spelled "YHWH." And of course, clerics are members of church leadership. Was it intentional? Who knows. Maybe somebody just thought "Tetragrammaton" sounded cool. However, it's a word that many people are unfamiliar with. Those who know it know what it means. |
This smells like a smart-aleck question, but here's your answer: Tetragrammaton: The four Hebrew letters transliterated as YHWH or JHWH (Yahweh or Jehovah). The term refers to this arrangement of letters. YHWH is not pronounced Tetragrammaton.

Sorry- Sometimes it's hard to tell in this medium. Can't hear inflection in the voice, see facial expressions, etc. Some people around here get off on provoking reactions. |
That is certainly what I took away from the movie is that it was a very negative commentary on communism. The "Father" character could have been a hologram of Hillary Clinton. |
I don't believe god is ever even mentioned in the movie. I think religion would interfere with the whole notion that you're not supposed to feel. It's more of a pro-freedom and anti-big brother movie than anything. |
That was what I came away with, that the .gov had turned the people into compliant, passionless automotons. The only thing that caused me to wonder was the way this term was used. After all, it has a very specific meaning. |
I dunno they're just adopting a caste system similar to that of the old religious institutions I guess. They mention the monastary. Perhaps it just has to do with devotion. Maybe tetragrammaton is eluding to the words hate, love, feel. There are probably Equilibrium boards out there where you could ask the experts. Or maybe you can try IMDB. |
